I enjoyed reading the author's first book, the silk road, and followed up immediately with this book. Big mistake. This book reads like a political commentary catered to readers with strong negative feelings toward the current US administration. The emphasis would be justified if brexit, Trump, and other similar events in the past few years turned out to be historical pivotal events, but we do not know, and this is a question best left to future generations of historians. As a fan of his first book, I wished he did not write this book. There are plenty of books on China's ambitions, there are plenty of books arguing for and against the current US adminstration, and there are no shortage of books on the US China relationship. This book adds neither new material nor insights. Other than the catchy title, I don't recall learning anything from reading this book.

This is today's and tomorrow's front page news, but it isn't talked about much because other news steals the spotlight. Read it now.

A nice continuation of the Silk Roads book, readable and timely book that helps you understand how history is unraveling in our time

Nothing

When asked about the significance of the French Revolution, it is said that Zhou Enlai responded : “it was to early to tell”. It’s unclear whether this is an actual quote or just an urban myth. However, I feel that the thought could well apply to Peter Frankopan’s new book, “The New Silk Roads”.Peter Frankopan’s original work, “The Silk Roads”, published in 2016 was a masterpiece of history. It opened the eyes of Western readers to the fact that there is more to the world than just the history of Europe and, later, the new world. Too many western readers think that world history broadly covers the Roman Empire, Dark Ages, Crusades, the discovery of the new world, the US Civil War, two World Wars and then victory for the west in the Cold War. Frankopan shows this to be so myopic. There is a vast history to China and central Asia that too many students do not study. This is a great shame as it seems that the arc of history is bending back away from the west to the east. Indeed, this is the purpose of Frankopan’s new book.Despite the strength of the argument, to write a “sequel” only two years after the original books is overly ambitious to say the least. A longer perspective is required. In other words, while the world economy may be increasingly dominated by China and the east, it is too early to conclude that this is inevitable. While Frankopan’s book is well written and a delight to read, we need more time to develop any firm conclusions. Having said this, I would still recommend both books to any reader with an interest in world history. Both books are provocative. Both books challenge orthodoxies. For this alone, Peter Frankopan must be commended.

This is a book that gives world history a new dimension. Well written, it will give the reader an understanding that a connected and global world is not new. Full of details, from travelers humorous writings to horrid details from conquests and power struggles around the world, from ancient times up till today. The authors viewpoint is refreshing and exposes how single minded we can become regarding our own past. Read it and learn something new. This is an important book. Absolutely recommended.

The book is great and worth 5 stars. But the narrator has the annoying habit of missing a few lines every now and then. The 3 stars is for him

For one that hasn't read the Silk Roads, this was a great read providing recent context on OBOR and the MSRI. Highly recommend!

The answer, on both counts, is a resounding, laugh-out-loud 'yes.'"―Chicago Tribune"Comedy Central's The Daily Show was a cultural phenomenon, and now it gets the oral history it deserves...Smith tells the show's story through artfully arranged first-person recollections. ..it is more than a collection of famous moments, but rather a work of distinctive, original social commentary."―The National Book Review"There is solace in this chatty and highly informative tome....THE DAILY SHOW (THE BOOK) is like eating popcorn, in that it's light and fun and easy to consume....the book is a love letter to the people that built The Daily Show and make it work night after night."―Vulture

Say what you will about fiction, but I'll choose memoirs over novels any day of the week. Even though I don't have cable, I have been religiously watching Daily Show clips for years now. So, the prospect of combining the those two things made my mouth water. Now having just finished it, it delivered pretty much everything I was expecting: basically, all of the "behind the scenes" stuff you don't see. I also found the treatment of Craig Killborn's years to be interesting. Surprisingly, there wasn't as much drama as I thought there would be, but honestly that's a good thing. What really comes through is how much like a family they were/are, and how devoted they've become to exposing b.s., no matter the source. It's truly amazing. As for the style of the book, it plays out like a talking-head documentary. A little bit different, but the narrative still unfolds coherently. So, if you're a fan of the show, getting this book is a no-brainer.

I love long oral history books on a variety subjects (and they are good value for the money, lots of content), and was a fan of the Daily Show (but my personal favorite was The Colbert Report). Lots of cool details and stories here for fans of the show in its best era. I'm only about 1/2 through it and it's good -- I must say a few things seem a bit dated already, particularly some of the stuff about the Bush era, in light of who the President is now and events in general since that time. They are open in this book that the crew and show are biased to the liberal side -- I do think Jon Stewart did a reasonably good job of jabbing both sides, obviously with more against the right. Loved when he went after the media talking heads and news biz as a whole, both sides. But I personally would prefer a little bit more balanced approach for a show like this, making fun of both sides and pointing out all their hypocrisy and bs, which they both have in spades.

I'm on CD # 6 of the 12 CD series (I think it's 12? It's a bunch!) that is funny, thoughtful, impartial, thorough story of how the Daily Show came to be, from start to current day, with many interviews and comments by all those involved with the show. I'm enjoying the heck out of it-- well researched and entertaining. The only thing I would have done differently is to record the actual voices of those who were interviewed (all the writers, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, etc) rather than get voice-over actors in there to simply voice their commentaries. The only real voice on the book (that I know for sure) was Jon Stewart, who did comment and narrate all his own pieces. I'm sure that hire the original people would have been a logisitical nightmare and would have cost a fortune, but it would have been wonderful.

Loved this book! I love that Jon Stewart not only provides a lot of information in the book but that it interviews everyone from current and previous correspondents to writers and producers of the show. The book delves pretty deep from the beginning of the show to the end with some juicy bits in between. I'm a huge fan of the show and am of this book!

One of my fav books ever. I was a huge fan of The Daily Show and Jon, so I found it all super entertaining and interesting. I couldn't believe how hard it was just to put together one show, I don't know how Jon did it for so long. It had to be draining, both mentally and physically. If your a fan of The Daily Show, you gotta read this. You won't regret the purchase, I promise. The format is an oral history format, so if thats not your thing, you musn't buy it.

If you're a fan of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart you'll love this book. It chronicles the evolution of the Daily Show from original host Craig Kilborn through Jon Stewart's last days on the show. It walk you through the behind the scenes struggles to change the direction of the show from "fake news" to actually a place where people got their news. If there are disputes between people, whether people working together on the show or guests - the author provides both viewpoints. Personally Jon Stewart was where I tuned in to get my take on politics and issues of the day and I can't tell you how much I miss him. Although he more than earned his "retirement". I would highly recommend this book to anyone who expressed an interest.

This was a fantastic format for chronicling one of the most important (THE most important ?) political satire shows of our time. Anyone paying attention knew Stewart was a mensch, but hearing from the whole cohort of creators of the Daily Show will show you just how brilliant and talented Stewart and his team is/was, and what a courageously decent guy it took at the helm to make this kind of TV and comedy history. This was an engaging, funny, fascinating page turner. Do yourself a favor and enjoy !

-The Daily Show had turned into a major program to understand the country and how it works, under the hand of Jon Stewart. This is a superb book, almost a day-by-day account, with no straight text but set up in quotes by all involved. It is definitely an insiders view of how the show came to be during the Stewart years, good days and bad, good times and bad, great times and horrific.-If you are in the least interested in The Daily Show, how it was put together and how it aired, I recommend this book with the highest praise.

I meant to buy the earlier editions of this book, but I'm actually glad I waited and got this one. It's a reference book unlike any other. Boxall et al make no claims on this being a full list or even a rough guide. They say it's defined more by what is not included than what is. It's a "snapshot" of the novel. Despite all of that, there are some interesting suggestions I'd never have found on my own and reading the blurbs about each book can be very helpful. There are some books I'd not include, others I think should be on. This is part of the experience of book lists like this -- arguing about the list helps me find even more books I might want to read!I'll keep this handy now, so when I want to know what to read next, I'll never have to make a crazy guess at the library or here on Amazon. I need a much larger bookshelf... While there have been changes through the years, I see it more as a way to find new authors. Then if I like something, I can continue on with their work. If I hate a book enough, I don't feel compelled to read all of the listed books by that author. Other things to note are that some books are the beginnings of a series - so really it offers more than 1001 if I go on to read the series. It also gives me a goal and a varied experience in some regards. While there are a decent number of women, I do wish it wasn't so eurocentric. Despite all that, add this to the other list books I own, and I'll always have thousands of books left to read. Now I just need a longer life.

This book is probably going to gain the most interest from readers and people who like books, which therefore means that a good portion of this book is likely to be familiar. It is no surprise to see titles like Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, The Old Man & The Sea. Certainly if I wanted to look through "1001 Books You Have Never Heard Of" then I would have gone elsewhere, but even this book offers many selections that are obscure, rare, unheard of, but of equal literary value to titles with more fame (my favorite that I have found is Solitude by Victor Catala). My only disappointment is that I thought that the editors should have been a little more selective about the choice of authors and perhaps excluding more duplicates from the same author. It is frustrating to see multiple books (some authors even have more than two) from Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Dostoyevsky--readers are likely to have heard of these writers, and the selections listed should be the most important of his or her work. Now, as a reader, should I enjoy whatever I read by Dickens or Dostoyevsky then maybe I will go read more (by default reading the others listed) and if I do not, then I will probably move on to the next author. If this even that type of book to someone. If not a type of book to discover more books to read, then a great coffee table book. Either way, I found the selections to be limiting. Really, in the world of literature, 1001 is a very small number.Still, I enjoy having the book on my shelf. I have tabs in the pages of "books read" in one color (red) and books I want to read in another color. If I am interested in reading a particular book type or era, I go to this volume; they are organized by publication date--not by authors name; in the end I think this is an interesting and logical choice. Complete table of contents and indexes in case you are looking for something in particular.

I recently found out about this book via a Goodreads group. I like reading challenges and I think this will be a good way to challenge myself. I like to think of myself as a well-rounded reader, but there are many titles in this list that I had never heard of prior to purchasing the book. I did notice that it is all fiction books and doesn't include Shakespeare or Beowulf or Gilgamesh, so apparently verse and plays are not included either. I would like to see another list to include some of the other literary genres and not just fiction. I do like that the chosen titles come from around the world and are not just focused on British and American literature.

I Have only read the list. Several I have read, I am 82 yo and I may read a few more . It is a great list of books, FPT

This book is amaaaazing. If you're a fellow bibliophile, I would highly recommend this book. One great perk about it is that a lot of the books they describe in here can be found for free in the Kindle store! :D

all lists are arbitrary. but a fun and interesting compilation. The reviews are short and thought provoking, not necessarily what I would have said. A few books I would never have read were they not included.

I agree with a lot of the other reviews that too many of the "Real" classics are left out. I think the problem is: when you ask for authors around the world to list the must read books each of their prejudices for their own countries authors comes out. That is probably why so many of the books chosen are written since the 1900's. Although most of the books chosen are probably great books to read, are three books by Toni Morrison really must reads over The Canterbury Tales, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Shakespeare, A Tale of Two Cities or An American Tragedy. Has anyone ever read "Aztec" by Gary Jennings? I was at a book store in Crested Butte, Colorado and I told the owner that "Aztec" was my favorite book and that he should read it. Seven years later I was back in Crested Butte and when I walked into the bookstore the owner immediately said to me "I remember you. You are the one that told me to read "Aztec". It is the best book I have ever read." Still, I recommend this book to everyone. ;)

A great summary of the greatest books. Nostalgia for the titles you have read, and an informative reading list for books to read for the rest of your life.

very good

Is very remarkable book is show the history of jihad in Sudan against the black, Women and christian minority

More people should read this.

Solid research...well done.General R. Wingate...personal Journals of the campaign...certainly came in handy to Butler research !

Enjoyable and informative reading. Author seems to know the facts and presents both sides of the conflict with balance and fairness.

Overall, so far, I am finding this book very interesting. Since I have not finished the book yet, I am giving the author the benefit of the doubt with a 3 star rating but I have to say that I became a bit uneasy about the author's facts when I read this statement in the sixth paragraph of Chapter 1: "Archeologists and anthropologists have found evidence that humans have lived in the Sudan for at least nine million years"Okay, perhaps this is a misprint and was supposed to be nine thousand years but in any event , to quote the website Universe Today:"While our ancestors have been around for about six million years, the modern form of humans only evolved about 200,000 years ago.".Someone should have caught this error, and I just hope that this mistake is an exception and not indicative of sloppy research or editing.Hopefully, the essential parts of the narrative are accurate and well researched.

While I agree to a certain extent that the author does jump around a little from time to time, the overall product is fantastic. Not only do you get a glimpse at the early instances of Islamic extremism, but you also get a view from the world super power of the conflict. The British political climate, as short as it was, gave me a desire to see what other lessons we may learn from their folly. A fantastic book on a neglected subject.

Every American should have to read this book sometime in their life.Explains the birth of radical Islam and how the religious Zealots used this religion to control an uneducated ,poor group of people by promising a better life if they die for their master in the afterlife under the guise as a Son of God. When you are hungry people are easily led and gullible.

Review

"The equivalent of a world map of restaurants which are highly recommended by 660 chefs."—CentMagazine.co.uk"We're excited about tucking into a new edition of the great gastro guide."—Sunday Times Travel Magazine"[For the] oft-travelling foodie who is always on the lookout for in-the-know tips on where to eat... [A] detailed, well-organised guide."—Olive"The fully updated and revised, third edition, of this critically-acclaimed book comes out on the 21st of March this year. Containing 4,538 restaurant recommendations in 570 cities, you can be sure that wherever you are, whatever cuisine you are in the mood for, this encyclopedic book will have what you're after."—AbslolutelyLondon"This freshly updated version of the unparalleled reference guide includes 4,500 restaurant recommendations from 650 noteworthy chefs from around the world, with new U.S. locations added like Detroit, San Antonio and Indianapolis."—Tasting Table"These days, everyone is a food critic. Whether diners are Tweeting complaints or writing online reviews, there's a platform for anyone with a wireless connection and an opinion. This makes it difficult to know who to trust... While the Michelin Guide is a marker of quality, it represents a somewhat narrow view that's at odds with today's diverse, fast-paced food scene. Where Chefs Eat: A Guide to Chefs' Favorite Restaurants, is a strong alternative. In this global guide to local haunts, which was first published in 2013 (this is the third, most up-to-date iteration), the world's best chefs offer thousands of restaurant recommendations."—MrPorter.com"Fully updated and revised... Critically acclaimed... You can be sure that, wherever you are, this book will have right place."—Absolutely Dulwich & South East"Mouth-watering."—Buzzfeed.com"Brilliant."—CODE Quarterly"Five years ago saw the release of the first edition of Where Chefs Eat... To this day it's still the only real food guide in the world that is comprised solely of recommendations by chefs... [This] makes the guide uniquely useful. Chefs travel and eat out constantly and are plugged into the food scene in their locale... It's this that means the guide covers everything from the very best local hole-in-the-wall selling just the one perfect example of the local speciality for almost no money, to the three star Michelin restaurants. The new edition of the guide has stuck to its original format but has been usefully expanded upon, making it worth while upgrading to should you have an earlier edition... This new edition of Where Chefs Eat is the only restaurant and food guide you could possibly need. In continuing and expanding the encyclopaedic nature of the previous editions, it has become truly indispensable to anyone looking for inspiration either at home or when traveling and wanting to experience the food culture of another place. The insight of the chefs surveyed is the key to this and matched by no other publication."—LondonLamppost.com"Very comprehensive... Absolutely fascinating read, plus really helpful recommendations. A inspiring insight for all diners!"—HotBrandsCoolPlaces.com

very little information here, & most restaurants are merely listed with address & no review. We know many of these cities & restaurants well, & at least half are not restaurants we would recommend to a friend. it seems the chefs want to list their friend's places and/or show they know the "big name, expensive" spots in every city. for example, in Las Vegas most chefs in town eat at Raku after work, but it is not even listed. this book is huge, is printed on very cheap rag paper, & you should save your money & instead read online reviews like open table VIP diners who are not trying to impress you.

We bought the first edition and have worn it out in preparing for travels (ours and those of our friends). We have found some of the most amazing places that we never would have discovered on Yelp or Trip Advisor. You will certainly find many of the Michelin recognized restaurants, but the real benefit is the inclusion of high quality places that have not yet caught the eye of the big M as well as less formal eateries that will never be considered for a star.. Consulting the book has become part of our trip planning ritual. If food is an important part of your itinerary, this book is a must have. Thanks for the updates in the second edition!

Oh gosh! this is a great go-to guide for traveling. I live in San Francisco and know a fair amount about the food scene here so I examined the San Francisco selection. Their restaurant selection was excellent and spanns 5 star restaurants to hole-in-the-wall diners that are absolute gems and I almost wish they didn't even mention (I don't like "my restaurants" getting crowded.) I travel a lot and have used this book for restaurants all over the world. It hasn't led me astray yet!

I purchased this book as a gift and it was a hit! The recipient is a bit of a foodie and travels a lot for his job, so it was fun for all of us to look through the book to find restaurants any of us had already been to, as well as find new ones to visit. My favorite part is that not every restaurant is expensive - local, reasonable favorites are also included. I plan on purchasing two copies of the new version when it's released - I only wish it had released before the holidays!

Sent 2 and gifts and kept one for ourselves. Great book because it’s not all expensive restaurants or “fancy” foods. The recipients LOVED it. Great gift.

We have enjoyed using this book to guide us to new restaurants as we have traveled. So far, we have really enjoyed each of the restaurants we tried. I would prefer a bit more detai on each of the restaurants but the book is already huge at 975 pages - there is just no room.

Cute. Aesthetically beautiful, and actually well-informed. I gave it to a chef friend, intending for it to be just something cute to have on his bookshelf and he said it was pretty legit and had some excellent information in it. I don't know if he said it to flatter or if he said it because it's true, but either way it was a hit.

Received it as a gift...loved it so much had to get one for a friend!!
