About the Author

Mike Alfred grew up and was educated in Johannesburg. He worked for large corporations before starting his own human resources consultancy. During the eighties and nineties he wrote and published the Manpower Brief, a human resources, industrial relations and socio-political newsletter, purchased by many leading South African companies. He is the author of four business books.Mike Alfred's poetry has been featured in many South African literary magazines and anthologies. His book of poems, Life in the Suburbs (Snail Press), was published in 1994. Mike has written features on Johannesburg for The Sunday Independent, The Star and most recently, Sunday Times Lifestyle and leads walking tours through the city. He and his wife reside in a house on Langermann's Kop in Kensington. They have a son and daughter who also live in Johannesburg and are proud grandparents to three young boys.

Grade 3–6—Inside a bright and attractive cover is a short introduction and a "Choose your tools" chart of drawing instruments. Then there are more than a dozen different Egyptian symbols and pictures for budding artists to replicate. Masiello uses the method made popular by Lee J. Ames's "Draw 50…" series (Doubleday), starting with a basic shape and showing how details can be added one step at a time. He also includes extra suggestions for ambitious artists. Each finished picture is printed in full color and accompanied by a short paragraph that tells an interesting fact about the subject matter. Some of the drawings are quite complicated but they are broken down into manageable sections. For example, one spread shows how to draw the body of Isis, while the next shows how to draw the head. The complexity of some of the drawings may be intimidating to less-confident students, but most are doable for the target audience. Ting Morris's Arts and Crafts of Ancient Egypt (Smart Apple Media, 2006) has a variety of craft ideas and more background information than this offering, but it does not focus on drawing. This book is awesome! Originally, I checked reserved it from the library for a homeschooling unit on Ancient Egypt. When my 7 year old daughter saw it, she grabbed it off the shelf. She loves it so much I had to purchase our own copy.This book shows step-by-step how do draw Egyptian style motifs and people. If your child loves to draw or even trace, this book is for you! For an extra special art project, draw in ink and then go over with watercolor. You can even color the motifs, cut out the individual pieces, and then make a collage of them and add hieroglyphic symbols. Very versatile with a little imagination.

Ralph Masiello's drawing books are so liberating for people, both kids and adults, wanting and learning to draw. I have the entire collection in my classroom library and they are always a favorite go to choice for "center time."

We're really enjoying working through this book. The instructions are clear and simple. My 9 year old has been able to create some great pictures with it. It fits in great with our ancient history lessons.

I had hoped that my 7 yr old would be interested in this book, especially for the drawing help, but no. It is well made & informative so I will save it in hopes that he picks it up.

Perfect!! My grandson just loves Egypt! He has headdress and draws all kinds of Egyptian gods and ancient pyramids. He checked out a drawing book from the library, but now he has his own drawing book. I think Ralph Masiello's are wonderful for kids.
