I debated between 3 and 4 stars. The book is well written, and the author went through every possible test to discover what worked and didn't in her brain's memory and other functions. However, you can conclude that there are so many possibilities for brain dysfunction, from diminishing hormones, to diseases, to various medications, and to hitting your head that there's nothing substantial you can do to prevent or correct brain impairment. That was the very depressing aspect. Ramin weaves research in between her tests, so that you get not only an anecdotal view, but also a broader view from scientific investigation. This book's copyright is way back into 2007, and I wish she'd do a more up-to-date revisit to this topic. Because of the older copyright, you should be suspect in how accurate those older research results are. Heck, I wish SOMEONE would re-visit this topic with more current research that either disputes or validates the older data. The older copyright tempted me to give this 3 stars. One conclusion notable for all--make sure you ASK your physicians about the effect on memory of ANY medications they prescribe. If they don't know, check out the internet for more recent research (if available) on the side effects of the drug. Don't take it for granted if a doc says s/he doesn't know or if you're told it's minimal. Once a brain is bruised or worse, has a bleed, there's no going back to a well functioning brain.

This woman is a hypochondriac. It seems that she has so many ailments that it's a miracle that she makes it through to lunch the next day. (And that brings up the very apt question: If these illnesses were only as bad as they were in her imagination.....were the treatments that she investigated ones that had mass/ efficacy, or were they only because she was suggestible enough to feel better?)This is the second of her books that I have read (although it was published earlier than the first), and both follow the same format. The author talks about some problem that she has and she turns her experiences with going to MANY doctors into a book. Also, if the question is: What can damage memory? Then the answer from this book is: Anything and everything.1. Depression2. Insomnia3. Medications4. Stress5. Generalized metabolic disorders6. Alcohol7. Technology8. Chemical ExposureThe author herself has no less than 10 (!) interventions. (I wonder where did she get the money for all of this treatment? There are tens of thousands of dollars in treatment here.)Intervention#1: Assessment#2: Dietary Supplments#3: MyBrainTrainer#4: Neuropsychological Battery#5: Stimulants Adderall and Provigil#6: Meditation#7: Neurofeedback#8: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy#9: Hypothyroidism Treatment#10: Dancing lessons. There were a lot of neat little tidbits of information, and the writing is decent.I think that the takeaway messages from this book are something like:1. Use it or lose it2. Keep your health up. (Metabolic issues are a tried and true way to carry your age a lot worse than you should.)3. Real social interaction.I'd pay about $3 for this book.

As a newly minted 48 year old man, I had my concerns. A little too much of my time these days was spent obsessing over "why couldn't I remember that?" and "Why is it so hard for me to learn this new thing?" I then coupled those feelings with "Oh my, am I slipping? Is there something very wrong with me?". This book really helped. The first thing it did was to reassure me that what I was going through was completely normal. Then it went through a very unscientific journey on how to deal with it. It was a wonderfully practical approach. Long story short, there are very real and very unavoidable cognitive challenges ~everyone~ will go through in mid-life. However, there are things that we can do to make the most of what we have. This book will help you get there. One other note, there are ~tons~ of books on "How to sharpen your mind" and "How to remember everything." This is not one of those books. This book will not tell you exactly what you need to do to bring by brain back to the place it was when you were 25. That's just not possible. However, this book reassure you and give you a toolbox to work with what you have. That was really refreshing for me.

The middle ground between memory loss (related to normal aging) and Dementia is the diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). This is the only book I have found entirely devoted to MCI. Unless you have CMI, or you know someone has CMI or Dementia, you cannot speak intelligently about cognitive problems (the ones NOT associated with the normal aging process) unless you read this book. The author pursued many options to improve her cognitive functioning and documented them all. She found out she did not have AZ, and she did improve her memory using several of the options. I too have CMI. In addition to taking the medication Namenda (recommended for memory problems associated with Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome), I have had to use oxygen, alpha-lipoic-acid and other supplements reviewed by the author to maximize my brain's performance. I did extensive research on the internet, but before trying anything, I read "Carved in Sand" as a second source for the remedies I found most recommended on the internet posts. This is an Excellent Book by someone who deals with MCI.

Bestselling author, Dan Buettner, chronicles the updated version of Blue Zones. This Second Edition includes extensive research on travels, intriguing stories, interviews, and much more. The author led teams of researchers across the globe to uncover secrets and gather vital information about longevity as he interviewed extraordinary people, who lived in different communities around the world. Dan Buettner included in his research diet, behavior, stress-coping techniques his subjects used, and other key factors that played a role to lifestyle. In addition, he noted family and diet habits in the new Blue Zone of Greece, along with a new guide on how simple changes can add years onto a life. The author conveys the importance of adapting the right way, and what the fascinating results could be. The remarkable stories of the author's travels with interviews, inspired lessons for living longer. Interesting conclusions are based on the best practices used for a healthy lifestyle, including the right choices to make. Community, spirituality, and lifestyle were highlighted throughout the research. A thought-provoking read from beginning to end as it grabs the reader's attention immediately, and draws you right in. Uplifting, informative, concise, and highly recommended.

Dan Buettner’s fantastic 2012 New York Times Magazine Article, “The Island Where People Forgot to Die”, was my introduction to Blue Zones. Are there places in the world where people disproportionately live to be 100 or more? And if so, what’s their secret? With the backing of National Geographic, Buettner and his crack team of top-notch scientists went around the world and found 5 places that fit the strict Blue Zones criteria: the Italian island of Sardinia; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; the Seventh-Day Adventists of Loma Linda, California; and the Greek island of Ikaria. These regions have a disproportionately high population of centenarians, up to 50 times the US average. But even more remarkably, their centenarians are independent at a rate far higher than in the US and Europe: 90% vs 15%. What’s going on?Having gone to medical school and read the NYT Magazine article, I thought I knew what was in the book and thus postponed reading it. That was a mistake. Buettner and team are incredibly thorough in their approach, uncovering details about living a good life that casual observation would miss. And they back every one of their conclusions with as much data as they can.Definite patterns emerge amongst the various groups. All of them foster a strong sense of community and intergenerational cohesiveness. In Costa Rica, there’s a 99-person village all descended from one person, and there’s a touching picture of a blissed-out 104-year old lady holding her great-great-granddaughter. People hang out with family and friends every day, and the elderly live with their offspring. All the communities eat a mostly plant-based diet. Exercise is also built into their daily activity. Although it’s safe to say that none of these people have ever stepped into a gym, every day they till fields, work gardens, tend sheep over hilly terrain, and walk around. Some other data points also emerge. Several of the communities incorporate goat milk products in their diet, which is more nutritious than cow’s milk. Red wine features prominently in the two Mediterranean communities, with Sardinian Cannonau offering an extra dose of antioxidants. Almost all the communities eat diets rich in beans.Although I hope you find this review useful, there are several reasons to read the book in its entirety. First, there are a lot of practices worth incorporating into your own life that I don’t have room to mention in detail, e.g. “ikigai”, your reason to get up in the morning; “moai”, a group of friends who meet regularly; and turmeric.Second, by reading the stories of all five communities, you not only get the details but also the gestalt of living a long and fruitful life. Is there a worldview that predisposes to healthy longevity?Third, the healthy, functioning centenarians profiled will turn your preconceptions of aging upside down. They also have sterling advice to offer: “Eat your vegetables, have a positive outlook, be kind to people, and smile.”Fourth and most important: do you really have something better to do than learning how to live a long, productive and healthy life? If so, I’d like to know what that is. In the meantime, I also got the book for my parents, and would encourage you to do the same. Its life-affirming message is wise and invigorating for all future centenarians.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Happiness Engineer and author of The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible, the highest-rated dating book on Amazon for 4 years, and Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine

After learning about the Blue Zones I was inspired to book a vacation with my girlfriend to Ikaria Island in Greece. I have to say it was the one of the best experiences we ever had.I've read all the comments on here, and for those who keep complaining about it's not scientific enough, well they just don't get it and probably never will. The problem with most people is they want to know which foods to eat, which supplements to swallow and what kind of exercises to do at the gym and how often. As the author states it's not about that. It's a combination of many things and all about doing things naturally.Ikaria was the most laid back place I've ever been to. No one is in a hurry there and they have no concept of time. It took me a couple of days to adjust to it, but after working years at a job where your boss freaks out if you are 2 minutes late, it's was a refreshing place. Plus visiting the historic sites, eating the food, interacting with the locals who live there, and visiting the thermal springs, was all refreshing. If there ever was a fountain of youth, this place was it. Everyone was so friendly and treated us like family. We went during the very end of the tourist season to get a better of idea of how the locals really are instead of having to deal with tourist. The wine is different than other wines, the honey is unique, the teas are unique. In fact everything about Ikaria is unique. It's easy to make healthy choices since this place nudges you into them. Even the walks don't seem like exercise because the scenery is so beautiful. Even getting to the beaches at many places requires a climb down the rocks. My point is the author wrote the perfect book in the perfect way. I didn't want to read some dry boring book about scientific charts and numbers. The author writes from an explorer's point of view and there is no better way to put the points across. So open your mind and forgot your normal way of thinking. Or better yet, get off your butt and actually go visit a Blue Zone area like we did. You won't regret it and the book will make even more sense to you after experiencing it yourself.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: Hugh MacLeod Reviews Linchpin Hugh MacLeod is an artist, cartoonist, and Web 2.0 pundit whose blog, gapingvoid.com, has two million unique monthly visitors. His first book, Ignore Everybody, was an Amazon Top Ten Business Book of the Year and a Wall Street Journal bestseller. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of Linchpin: This is by far Seth’s most passionate book. He’s pulling fewer punches. He’s out for blood. He’s out to make a difference. And that glorious, heartfelt passion is obvious on every page, even if it is in Seth’s usual quiet, lucid, understated manner. A linchpin, as Seth describes it, is somebody in an organization who is indispensable, who cannot be replaced—her role is just far too unique and valuable. And then he goes on to say, well, seriously folks, you need to be one of these people, you really do. To not be one is economic and career suicide. No surprises there—that’s exactly what one would expect Seth to say. But here’s where it gets interesting. In his best-known book, Purple Cow, Seth’s message was, “Everyone’s a marketer now.” In All Marketers Are Liars, his message was, “Everyone’s a storyteller now.” In Tribes, his message was, “Everyone’s a leader now.” And from Linchpin? "Everyone’s an artist now." By Seth’s definition, an artist is not just some person who messes around with paint and brushes, an artist is somebody who does (and I LOVE this term) “emotional work.” Work that you put your heart and soul into. Work that matters. Work that you gladly sacrifice all other alternatives for. As a working artist and cartoonist myself, I know exactly what he means. It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it. The only people who have a hope of becoming linchpins in any organization, who have any hope of changing anything for the better in real terms, are those who have the capacity to do “emotional work” at a high level—to be true artists at whatever they set their minds on doing. The guys who just plod around the office corridors, just turning up for their paycheck.... Well, those guys don’t have a prayer, poor things. The world is just too interesting and competitive now. And Seth then challenges us, the readers, to become linchpins ourselves. To make the leap. To become artists. To do emotional work, whatever the sacrifice may be. It’s our choice, and it’s our burden. Seth won’t be there to catch us if we fall, but to become the people we need to be eventually, well, we probably wouldn’t want him to, anyway. Congratulations, Seth. You have penned a real gem of a book here. Rock on. --Hugh MacLeod

A truly amazing book. One whose advice is so simple and clear that it seems obvious until one moment you put it down and find that you're a changed person. I'm typing this review after having finished a rough draft of a creative project I'd put aside for a year. I'm high with the feeling of "done." Might have I done it without this book? Perhaps. But reading it helped me spot the resistance creeping up on me when what I was producing wasn't perfect and fight it and get to done. This is probably the millionth review of this book, and Seth Godin probably doesn't care, but he changed my life and for that I am grateful.

We are all artists. That is the point that author Seth Godin is trying to get across in his book Linchpin. His objective with writing this book is to change the way people look at their work. The goal is to inspire people to no longer follow the norm, but instead create their own paths. With doing this they will build for themselves a more fulfilling, successful and rewarding career thus becoming better employees. When people are passionate about their work, it is in their nature to do whatever it takes to succeed. Having passion, a strong work ethic and drive to succeed is what makes a person a Linchpin. Linchpin – this funny little eight-letter word is the main concept of this book. What does it mean to be the linchpin of a company? How does one become a linchpin? Can anybody be a linchpin? All of these questions were addressed in the book. Before addressing all those questions, Godin first explains his definition of a linchpin. He does not mean for people to be like the small pin on a wheel. Instead of the literal definition, he considers a linchpin to be “an individual who can walk into chaos and create order, someone who can invent, connect, create, and make things happen.” (pg VI). Based off of this definition, he considers a linchpin to be a person that the company would not function with out. This person sees the problem clearly and does not panic. Instead they develop innovative solutions and create their own path. A linchpin never follows a map; they create it. When Godin looks at the corporate world, he sees many cogs. There are far to many people that blindly follow the rules set before them. They show up to work, do as they’re told and then leave. These people are compliant, under paid and in pain because they are not following their passions. This is Godin’s target audience. In order to inspire, you must speak to those in need. From Godin’s research he has developed seven abilities that make a great linchpin. All of these abilities make the linchpin a unique asset that is indispensible to the company. These seven abilities are 1) Providing a unique interface between members of the organization 2) Delivering unique creativity 3) managing a situation or organization of great complexity 4) leading customers 5) inspiring staff 6) providing deep domain knowledge 7) possessing a unique talent. Godin describes each of these talents in detail and explains why if a person is special enough to possess all seven, then they can be an indispensable worker. When explaining his point about why linchpins are the artists of their industry, Godin used a few good examples to help bring his point across. Artists create things, whether it is a beautiful painting, sculpture or new business model. All artists are innovators, creators and visionaries. The sign of a true artist is when they see something that’s so different and yet works so well. While Ev Williams was creating twitter, he did not use a conventional business model. When people first saw his project, they thought it was absurd. No one had ever seen such a thing. However, it’s uniqueness helped spread the word about twitter. Now it is a hugely successful form of social media. By throwing in the real life example of Ev Williams and Twitter into the book, it made Godin’s point more concrete. Without William’s quotes and the well-known success of Twitter, the point would have just been an abstract theory. Because I know the reality of Twitter, I could conceptualize the problems Williams faced and now I see how he overcame them. By using real life examples, Godin was able to better prove his point. While I felt like Godin had some great examples, he also had some that were sub par. There were many times where the book seemed more like a cliché inspirational speech, than anything of substance. When discussing how one becomes a linchpin, Godin wrote that we all could be CEO’s of top companies. He used the example of Richard Branson and how he built his airline company. Godin tells the story of his idea for Virgin Atlantic and then goes on to say that anyone could do Branson’s job if they thought creatively enough and knew what to look for. While this is a sweet and thoughtful thing to say; it is not accurate. In reality not everyone can be a CEO. It takes a lot of leadership skills, vision and intelligence to be a good leader. It’s important for a good leader to always be looking for new opportunities, make important decisions and understand your audience. Each of those adjectives are characteristics that Branson possesses, however not everyone has them or can learn them. Even if someone did, they are not the only qualities that make a good linchpin or guarantee success. Godin devotes a whole chapter on “becoming a linchpin”. Even if someone reads the advice a thousand times that does not guarantee that they can apply it. While every one is special and has a lot to offer the world, that does not mean they will be the linchpin of their company. It takes practice, intelligence and a lot more than just reading a book to teach the skills needed to succeed. Overall this book would get a B rating on a traditional college grading system. It brings up some interesting points about how to become a better worker as well as helped me better understand not to let my fear inhibit me from trying a new method. I learned that the best inventions were created by people who looked at things in a different way than the average person. They were able to see the problem, understand it and then had the courage to try something new. This is a useful skill that any body can use in their work or while at home. While that was a useful skill, Godin had a tendency to ramble on in the book. Sometimes his lessons sounded more like a cliché speech, then something I could see myself applying. Godin has accomplished a lot in his life. He has seen much success in the marketing world. If he had incorporated some of those experiences in the book, it would have felt more genuine and less like someone preaching to me about having a good work ethic. This would have helped me to better visualize how his points are feasible. Despite the rambling, the book does have some worthwhile points that are important for anyone in the workplace to understand. For anyone who is just entering the workforce or feels stuck at his or her job, I would recommend this book as a useful guide on how to navigate the corporate world.

Some complain that this book doesn't have enough technical details, the way a textbook would. This is instead a book that will change your mindset about work and careers. It's a fun read and very valuable for people who want extraordinary careers.

There are many quotable excerpts from this book and though it can be repetitive at times, the overall message is positive and inspiring. If you’re a quick reader, the repetition will give you deja vu of earlier chapters, but the author hits the nail on the head. (Bonus: A passerby on my commute struck up a conversation over the book as I was holding it and mentioned that the author was equally inspiring in person.)

Too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking. I've read plenty of books in the self-improvement genre, a lot of which I can read from cover to cover with ease. With "LinchPin," I'm sorry to say, my eyes glazed over by page 80. Also, the book was too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking. Oh, and did I mention? The book was too repetitive and certainly nothing groundbreaking.EDIT: I'm changing my review from 1 stars to 3. I mustered up enough courage to finish reading the remainder of the book. After you get beyond the repetitive nature of the first 100 pages, it starts to become a bit less painful and somewhat motivating.

Cute book, however - As previous reviewer stated, there are no images of the Black Panther without his mask. I was very disappointed as I hoped to show my child that superheroes come in all colors.

The text and pictures are pretty good, and I was excited to share this with my son. I was surprised that there are no pictures of Black Panther without his mask on. This book which is ostensibly about a black superhero shows only black villians, and covers the face of it's hero.We get to see Peter Parker without his mask on two pages of the Spiderman golden book, yet somehow we never see T'Challa as King of Wakanda. Was excited to introduce my son to some diversity here, but I guess not. I would say this is just an oversight, but three of the pages here also include other avengers, and there are mostly all represented (I mean even Ant Man and Wasp are there), but no Falcon/Sam Wilson. So, I dunno. Seems like a missed opportunity

Good book, but don’t like how they called Black Panther a Chief.” He’s the KING of Wakanda.... Go ahead and say it Little Golden Book! KING!

I was so excited to get this book for my son, he loves Black Panther and always asks to rent the movie. The book arrived about a week ago and we finally sat down to read it tonight. Imagine my shock when I realized that there isn't a single illustration in the book that T'Challa out of the Black Panther suit. All of the other superhero Golden Books introduce the hero and show them in their regular appearance at least once. Captain America introduces him as Steve Rogers who loves America. Iron Man introduces him as Tony Stark who loves to invent. Even Hulk introduces him as the scientist Bruce Banner who got accidentally bombarded with gamma rays. In each of these books you see the hero in his day to day appearance, but all of those heroes look like my son with light skin. It is important for kids to see and understand that people who don't look like they do are good people and can be superheroes. I can't even imagine how disappointing it would be for a little kid of African heritage to open this book and find that you never see in the pictures that Black Panther has dark skin like he does. Otherwise it was a typical Golden Book, fun story, action scenes, but come on we can do better.

If you are trying to show your child that all superheroes aren't white, this one doesn't do it. He isn't shown at all without his mask.

This is a nice book for preschoolers who love super heroes and Black Panther in particular. Since he is obviously too small for the movie, we have used the Little Golden Books for a good age-appropriate way to learn about the super heroes he likes. The Thor one is a favorite in our house. This one is good and is still very age appropriate. My only complaint is what others have said, why no pictures of Black Panther outside of his costume? I think seeing the secret identity is a big part of super heroes for kids. Since my son is bi-racial, we were excited to have a super hero that is a person of color too. Since we never see him out of the costume, that whole element is lost in this book. BUT, my 3 year old LOOOOOOOOOOVES it, so that is good!

Every single super hero golden book shows the hero without the mask except this one. What's different about this one: Black Panther is a black man. Not once have I ever been upset or disappointed with a golden book until this one. the publisher should be ashamed

So your kid is too young for the Marvel action flicks, read the Little Golden Books instead! We do this for our kindergartener and it help help understand pop culture when he is not ready for the full effect. This book is a great introduction to Black Panther.
