In another book review I said that it’s easy to tell the difference between a book written by a scientist and a book written about science by a professional writer. This is the latter. Nothing wrong with that, of course — you trade the first-hand account of the scientist involved in a field for the third person narrative, by someone whose trade is writing and telling a good story.Really, it’s a choice for the reader. Do you want to focus on the science or on the story? Of course, the author tries to do both, but, in this case, it’s the story that takes precedence, with sometimes explicit time-outs to explain the science (e.g., a chapter on the Big Bang).The core of the book is the story of the first confirmed detection of gravitational waves, generated by colliding black holes, in September, 2015, by LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) in Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana.Schilling takes us through the history leading up to gravitational wave detection, from their prediction in general relativity through early attempts to detect their presence, and on to the surprisingly quick detection once LIGO came online. He takes some pains to explain both the history — gravitational waves were speculated upon prior to Einstein’s publications — and some of the physics behind them.Exactly what a gravitational wave is requires some explanation. Typically, waves are explained through analogy — a rock falls into a pond, causing waves to propagate through the pond’s water. But the analogy falls short. There is no medium like the water in the pond — the waves are ripples in space, or spacetime, itself. The ripples don’t propagate through space, the waves are waves in space itself — expansions and contractions in spacetime caused by gravitational events, like a collision between black holes. It doesn’t take a cataclysmic event like a collision of black holes to create gravitational waves, but it does take an event of that magnitude to trigger current detection technology.Schilling’s story captures the drama of the detection, but he also, rightly I think, tells the story of how the detectors were built. Gravitational waves were theoretical. No one had observed them. They were predicted, and their effects were observed. But to actually detect them was going to take a serious investment of time and money, not to mention the careers of the scientists involved. Getting funding for detecting something that may or may not exist, and may or may not be detectable with the planned instruments — that’s not an easy thing to go to funding sources with, in the United States or elsewhere.And what is the payoff?Confirming a principal prediction of general relativity is a huge payoff for scientists. Knowing that our account of the universe is confirmed at such a foundational level not only increases our confidence in that account. But it also sets constraints around where we have to go next, in the looming problem of reconciling quantum theory with general relativity. Some scientists expected, and may still expect, gravitational waves to expose problems in relativity theory that will lead us to that reconciliation. So far, general relativity is left standing in its predictions.Maybe more than anything else, though, gravitational wave detection presents us with what Schilling describes as a kind of additional sense modality. Gravitational waves are a wholly different phenomenon from electromagnetic radiation, sound waves, or any other medium through which we can observe what happens in the universe. When we opened our extended senses to radio, microwave, and other non-optical parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, we detected things that were completely unknown, like the cosmic microwave background legacy of the big bang. The ability to detect gravitational waves doesn’t just open another part of the same spectrum, but a completely different medium for observation. As Schilling says, it’s probably what will surprise us that will turn out to be most valuable.And in fact observing gravitational waves has some distinct advantages over observations of electromagnetic radiation. Gravitational waves are not absorbed or reflected by dust or gas — emissions from their points of origin travel unhindered to our detectors. And some currently poorly understood phenomena, like dark matter and dark energy, have especially interesting gravitational properties and effects, maybe best studied via gravitational wave astronomy, complementing more traditional astronomy. Schilling teases some of those possibilities in his final chapter.And gravitational wave detection may help us to understand some of the missing pieces in the story of the universe’s evolution from the Big Bang. "Primordial black holes” may be detectable via gravitational waves and give us some clues to those missing pieces.The universe is actually heavily populated with natural gravitational wave detectors — pulsars. Pulsars emit highly regular, fast pulses of radiation — their regularity, fast pace, and strength of signal make them natural clocks. If there is a change in the period of a pulsar’s signal, something has caused it, and the something might be the stretching or contracting of space via gravitational waves.Observations of changes in pulsar timing via radio telescopes are one active area for gravitational wave detection.Schilling’s later chapters look forward to other sorts of detectors, extensions of the design behind LIGO and the similar Virgo detector in Italy. These include space-based detectors like the European Space Agency’s long-planned LISA, and an underground detector, KAGRA, in Japan, as well as a LIGO-like detector in India. An even more ambitious ground-based detector called ET (Einstein Telescope) is also in planning stages, and an American project, Cosmic Explorer, with yet greater sensitivity to detect fainter and fainter gravitational waves is in idea-stage.If you’re looking to catch up on the story of gravitational waves, and maybe go on to more depth on the science itself, this is a great place to start. Schilling is a good writer, he knows enough about the science to explain it for a relatively non-technical audience, and he knows how to tell the story.

While I am glad I read this book, I found the author's many chatty comments gratuitous, irritating, and condescending. The material seemed a bit stretched to me, as if to consume more pages. Fuller discussion of a few things the author apparently deemed beyond our ken would have been a more profitable use of pages. Adding Martin Rees as a co-author when all he wrote was the forward mislead me, but that was probably my fault for not reading the fine print. I bought this on the recommendation of a trusted friend who listened to it as an audio book. Maybe the author's "voice" worked better in that medium. For the price of the hard cover I bought I expected a better treatment of the subject. But some of the author's analogies were quite good by way of explaining, and that seems to be his strength. I'd add an extra half star for that element if I could. I usually read these kinds of books with impatient gusto in a couple of days, but it took me well over a week to finish this one.

Simply Astonishing! Every young student of Physics or Astronomy should leap at the chance to read this one! What a captivating inspiring story! I raced through the first 100 pages in a single sitting, then rationed myself to a single chapter per day to make the book last longer. I found that every time I picked it up to read some more, I was drawn in deeper and deeper. Each of the dozens of stories told in this book are woven together to support the main story, but with each side trip (to things such as Pulsars, the inner workings of Neutron stars, Weber bars, Carl Sagan's Apple Pie, BICEP2, Milisecond Pulsars, Frame Dragging, the anomalous precession of Mercury just to name a few) I'd reluctantly close the book, but my mind simply couldn't shut off after putting it down, and I'd be anxiously awaiting the next chance I'd have to spend another 30-minutes in this treasure trove of astonishing facts, and would find myself diving deeper into many of the topics Schilling brought up. Schilling writes with passion for the subject, and though I consider myself well-versed in Astronomy and Physics, there were so many fascinating nuggets in this story, that it was easy to be astonished anew! Highly recommended!! GREAT BOOK!!

Lucille Clifton: Lucille Clifton was born in Depew, New York, on June 27, 1936. Her first book of poems, Good Times, was rated one of the best books of the year by the New York Times in 1969.Clifton remained employed in state and federal government positions until 1971, when she became a writer in residence at Coppin State College in Baltimore, Maryland, where she completed two collections: Good News About the Earth (1972) and An Ordinary Woman (1974).She went on to write several other collections of poetry, including Voices (BOA Editions, 2008); Mercy (2004); Blessing the Boats: New and Selected Poems 1988-2000 (2000), which won the National Book Award; The Terrible Stories (1995), which was nominated for the National Book Award; The Book of Light (1993); Quilting: Poems 1987-1990 (1991); Next: New Poems (1987)Her collection Good Woman: Poems and a Memoir 1969-1980 (1987) was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize; Two-Headed Woman (1980), also a Pulitzer Prize nominee, was the recipient of the University of Massachusetts Press Juniper Prize. This marvelous volume collects all of Lucille Clifton's published books, and adds a generous helping of uncollected and previously unpublished ones. I've just spent a few days reading through all of them, being reminded of old friends and anthology pieces and discovering new favorites.Clifton's poems are accessible, compact, insightful, and meet any reasonable set of criteria for great and satisfying poetry. Sure, there is a section of those ouija board poems, but you can either pass over them or skim them. It's interesting that Clifton's ouija board had a poetic voice and set of concerns not unlike her own.The only things you need to add to complete your Clifton collection are the prose autobiography in A Good Woman and a selection of her children's books (if you like that form at all).Don't hesitate. Just buy the book and be comforted, challenged, sung to, filled with new insights, and delighted.We will not see her like again.

Lucille Clifton was so generous with her time and her students. This is the book of poems I return to over and over. it sitson my coffee table so I can browse and read her poems often. She celebrates life, courage over defeat, and if you love poetry, listen to her read on youtube. She was an expressive reader of her poems, "won't you celebrate with me/what i have shaped into/a kind of life?" She had no models. But her life is now a model for others.

This book is a treasure. I have given copies to friends--and got one signed by Clifton's gorgeous daughter Lexie at the Baltimore Book Festival. That one is now beside my bed (though its poems, especially the ones from THE TERRIBLE STORIES, keep me awake. I gave one to a composer/performer I know who will doubtless get an opera or two out of its "lyrics." As one fortunte enought to have known Clifton, whom I shall now call Lucille, I am grateful not only for her amazing poems, and her generosity in giving readings, gratis, for good causes, but also for some fuuny, bizarre anecdotes she told me, several of which have morphed into poems and stories of my own.

I was introduced to Lucille Clifton's poetry by the marvelous teacher (and poet) Elizabeth Alexander, who lectured on Clifton at Poets House in Battery Park City. Alexander talked about Clifton's deceptive simplicity and her life, in which she suffered illness and many losses (her mother, at an early age, her husband, two of her six children), but which left her unbowed. I wanted to know more, and bought this book. Here's a poem that Clifton called, "Haiku." "over the mountains/and under the stars it is/one hell of a ride." Think about the meaning of "hell" and the meaning of "one hell of a ride." That's what Alexander was talking about

Superb collection of poems from a true master. She captures so many themes with a wonderful use of language and meticulous word choices.

If you don't know her work this is a must read.

If you love Lucille Clifton, like I do, then you will love this book! She was an amazing poet and like all great poets, her words will live on!

After reading the entire collection, I wondered what I had been doing wrong with my life that I hadn't been reading more Clifton poems up until now.

This is a difficult book to read and a difficult review to write. Both lie in the book's richness and the fact that many books, not only reviews, have been written about Thucidides' masterpiece. For example, there is an excellent (and most warmly recommended) article in Wikipedia. Can I add anything? Well, it is still worth a valiant try. A word of warning- before you embark on this reading adventure, get yourself a good detailed map of the contemporary Mediterrenean. It would be a great help to understand the various moves and identify the many actors of this 21-year power-play.Thucidides has been labeled as the first scientific historian. His account is incredibly objective, even-handed , and non-partisan. He participated personally in the Peloponesian wars as a minor strategos (military leader or general) and was banished for not achieving what he was supposed to do. From that point on, he retired to his extensive family holdings in Tracia and gave all his time (presumably) to research the war and interview the witnesses. His account ends abruptly, probably due to his sudden death, and covers the first 21 years of the 27-year war. The best parts are the speeches of the leaders, generals and representatives of various countries or factions. Obviously, Thucidides had not been present on these occasions and considering the poor records available 2400 years ago, had no access to recordings or stenograms. Most are therefore hearsay, at best, or the authors conviction that what he related should have been said. Nevertheless, the speeches are a marvelous exmple of how human nature did not change one bit in more than two thousand years. The people we observe through Thusidides' words are intelligent, educated, ambitious, demagogues and true lovers of their countries, heroes and rogues, many times could be perceived by us as both good and bad, depending on circumstances. The squabling, cultured, even effeminate democratic Athenians prove to be exceedingly good at war and barely fail to subjugate the whole Peloponesian league led by the harsh warlike Spartans. For Thucidides, however, there are no moral judgements, only cold examination of circumstances. Even Alcybiades, a rare example of turncoat, double-dealer, demagogue and villain is not censured. Rather Thucidides raises his eyebrows questioningly at the naivete of the people who continued to believe and follow, nay even invite this man despite all the evidence available.Only in one case, that of Cleon, Thucidides looses his admirable cool. Cleon, the cowardly demagogue and cheat who instigates a doomed military campaign and is forced to lead it by the more responsible Athenian general. Thucidides describes that campaign how Cleon hesitates, stumbles, always puts his worst foot forward, and then wins by an unbelivable fluke. His description of thea rguments presented by the Athenian envoys to the representatives of Melos precede Macchiavelli's "The Prince" by two thousand years. The Melians choose honor and love of their freedom. Their cause being right, they are consequently slaughtered and the women and children sold into slavery.Do not omit his moving description of the Athenian plague. It is a rare gem!And by all means, do read it!

The price is unbeatable but the translation is pretty rough. Many sentences had to be reread to just sort out the awkward phraseology. Thucydides is hard to translate because even in his time his writing was criticized for neologisms, very quirky metaphors and abstractions and odd turns of phrase. But this makes it all the more important to have a good translation. This one does used modern terminology that is sometimes jarring in the context of the era of the history, So Thucydides was not an easy read for his contemporaries and thus a "good translation" that reads easily also fails to convey the characteristic of the actual work itself. The translation by Warner perhaps comes as close to palatable and yet conveys the unique style that is Thucydides. As a work, it could be a 21st Century treatise. The parallels to current events are almost eerie from the "neocon" Alcibiades urging Athens to the Iraquian Syracuse war disaster to the oligarchy displacing the Athenian democracy.... the parallels are remarkable.

I absolutely loved the style in which the story is told, rather than making everything as brief as possible, Thucydides takes his time, he is as long-winded as they come and that's a good thing. Sometimes a multitude of words are needed to fully explain a situation, sometimes it's even best to look at things from more than 1 perspective, a crazy thought I know. Around the page 400-500 mark it really hit me, this is exactly what we need in the world today. I can only hope that other Greek classics are done in the same style, at the very least this book has me seeking them out. I can even say who fought in, who won, and what the basic sides were in the Peloponnesian War, not something I could have said before I picked up this book

This 2,500 year-old translated book (The History of the Peloponnesian War) is a wealth of details for the researcher or historical scholar but difficult to read and comprehend in its present form for the lay person. This reader began it after it was referenced in a more modern book entitled: “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?” by Graham Allison; the book by Allison, I highly recommend; but not so much this ancient one unless one is a historian or researcher trying to get close to original source material. The text reminds on of a pre Gregorian calendar with reference to: “the fourteenth of the month of Elaphebolion; … and their allies on the twelfth day of the Spartan month Gerastius” The language structure was a bit cumbersome but the author (long since dead) assumes that the reader has a detailed grasp of the geography of ancient Greece. As an example part of the text reads: "The Lacedaemonians and Argives, each a thousand strong, now took the field together, and the former first went by themselves to Sicyon and made the government there more oligarchical than before, and then both, uniting, put down the democracy at Argos and set up an oligarchy favourable to Lacedaemon. These events occurred at the close of the winter, just before spring; and the fourteenth year of the war ended. The next summer the people of Dium, in Athos, revolted from the Athenians to the Chalcidians, and the Lacedaemonians settled affairs in Achaea in a way more agreeable to the interests of their country." Moreover, the author assumes that the reader is knowledgeable of all of the different city states and which alliances have been formed between various ones and how they change with time. The interested scholar could write an annotated book with maps and tables listing which city states were fighting against which other city states and how in tabular form this changes with time. As the war went on well more that (the first) ten year period before a break and then continued on, such a task with one or more maps is not trivial but would improve understanding of this historical (translated) original work. This reviewer was glad to have the manuscript available on a Kindle app; many words were sufficiently obscure as to be unknown to the reader, even so, some words were unknown to the Kindle dictionary or used in an archaic way such as “engine” or “trophy” or “embassy.” In any event it was a struggle to get through this book that capture the details of many years of battles involving many city states some with changing allegiances. Two alternative version might have wider appeal if written: an abridged version or an annotated version.
