I purchased this book after seeing Jeff Sharlett on the Rachel Maddow Show some time after he wrote it. It intrigues me, because I had read some other articles about the influence of the fundamentalists on our government. Also, that Jeff had started out researching religions,mas his parents were Christian and Jewish, and he was searching for his place.Little did he know what he would find when he started this journey. Last night, I saw him on CNN again. It seems the arrest of the Russian woman, Maria Butina, has reopened this can of worms. She infiltrated the NRA and other right leaning groups to find out how to influence Americans, for the Kremlin. Her attendance at The National Prayer Breakfast , as were 50 other Russians, just confirms what thus book originally talked about. That the agenda of the Kremlin and far right churches and groups, is the same, only hoping for different outcomes.There is a mention of Hillary Clinton attending prayer meetings in DC, but not that she was an active member. At any rate, the book becomes very relevant today......literally today. I am a Christian who was horrified by what I read, but , in the age of Trump, no longer even surprised by anything that goes on in the world.

Great book. Having always thought that the christian right was a "grassroots" bunch, I was shocked, and terrified at how they have penetrated, altered and basically overtaken this country. I always felt this was a christian country, but I had no idea the breadth and depth of the power the fundamentalists have here. Having been stymied by and appalled at the overwhelming "religiousity" in the US, I now understand where a lot of it comes from. This understanding does not make it easier to accept. In fact, after reading this book, if anything it makes it even scarier. This book made me wonder why I even bother to vote. As a non-christian, all I can say is this book scared the hell out of me. Well worth reading if you want to understand a lot of the politics in the US.

Jeff Sharlet did a very interesting thing by slipping himself into this world. I am only glad that he wasn't drawn into it - the cultish mentality is very easy to assume. This is an incredible expose of one of the organizations in America who poses a genuine threat to democracy and personal freedom, all under the guise of 'religious liberty' - religion meaning 'Christianity' and 'liberty' meaning 'conformation to an unrealistic theocratic ideology'.The Family and other related fundamentalist religious and ideological organizations are more real and terrifying than any 'Illuminati' that conspiracy theorists could dream of.

Well written and disturbing. An inversion of Christian values has been peddled to the elites to 'justify' whatever devious activities they do. 'Cells' of this Faux Christian movement have been around now for decades apparently, in the halls of power running amok.. Simply put, 'The Family' is a cult, for the well connected. It's purpose, is to get these people even MORE connected, and to swing dodgy deals. No self-criticism of the members or of their actions is ever encouraged.

The number of influential members of the "Family" or the "Fellowship" or the "C Street Family" will blow your mind. Not only the conservatives you'd expect like Sam Brownback, Sen Don Nickles (R-Oklahoma), Sen Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), Sen Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico), scandal-ridden Sen John Ensign (R-Nevada), Sen James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma),Sen Bill Nelson (D-Florida) and Sen Bill Nelson (D-Florida), as well as Reps. Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), Frank Wolf (R-Virginia.), Joseph Pitts (R Pennsylvania), Zach Wamp (R-Tennessee) and Bart Stupak (D-Michigan). What you might not know is that according to Mother Jones (in an article co-written by Sharlott) but Hilary Clinton is also a member of this groupAlso read Sharlott's "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy" for more on this. Scary and revealing. Forget the noisy Westboro Baptists. Read about the powerful my placed Christian fundamentalists who can justify slaughtering poor people elsewhere because they believe their powerful place is evidence that they have a personal relationship with Jesus.

Excellent first-hand, hands-on research into one of the most powerful and influential organizations in U.S. politics. Is "Jesus plus nothing" religion, or is it simply unquestioned obedience to the powerful? The book gets a bit weaker in its later chapters, but the core of the book is spellbinding and very revealing.

This book is beyond terrifying. Jeff Sharlet takes you inside the organization known as "The Family", a Christian fundamentalist group which has a lot of influence over many of our elected leaders and private industry CEOs. This organization is dirty and, from my viewpoint, is partially to blame for the condition of our nation. I strongly recommend anyone with an interest in government read this. It's very eye opening and terrifying.

It is hard to find a book that in so few pages gives you a complete account of what socialism is today. Thomas J. DiLorenzo did it by synthesizing the ideas, the facts and the omnipresence of this malevolent doctrine, which is not an easy task. Socialism works as a maze that is always on progress so you cannot completely encompass it. When you believe that you found the layout, another corridor appears.Just sixteen chapters were necessary to cover the topic in its most recurring manifestations. The chapters are brief and the total time of reading is about three hours, but here and there you feel the temptation of underlining some sentence or quote, delaying the final. This is the case, for instance, of the public interest theory of regulation, which far from one believes "is usually the result of lobbying by industry (and sometimes unions) to stifle or eliminate competition."Although the book dedicates part of chapter five to talk about the victims of communism, the core of the work is not that topic but the presence of the doctrine today in most of democratic states. Socialism has pervaded not only governments, it is present in any single manifestation of human culture, from art, to music, to literature, to theater, to movies. It is impossible to surpass it, to rid of it, and this is in part because socialism appeals rather to emotions than reasons. This book gives you reasons, it doesn't make you cry or laugh, but it also gives you stimulating examples of entrepreneurs like John D. Rockefeller or Cornelius Vanderbilt, who based on knowledge and imagination jumped over the limitations imposed by the factors of land, capital and labor.As I said, socialism is living with us, is not a museum artifact. Is right here under the disguise of a democratic state, and it shows its claws whenever a regulation, a minimum wage, a health system, appear: "In the foreword to the 1976 edition of his famous book, The road to Serfdom, Nobel laureate economist Friedrich Hayek wrote that the definition of 'socialism' evolved in the twentieth century to mean income redistribution in pursuit of 'equality,' not through government ownership of the means of production but through the institutions of the welfare state and the 'progressive' income tax. [So, the author says, t]he means may have changed, but the ostensible end--equality--remained the same."Well, "The problem with socialism" helps you see through the veil. In fact, and despite that the examples are centered almost exclusively in the U.S. history, as a Chilean reader I can say that nowadays we are suffering from first class socialism, and in every case ("onerous taxes, regulations, the welfare state, inflation," you name it) we have a version of this monster in charge. So in times, the book is also talking about us.Far from being dead, socialism has only changed in the surface. That's why, I guess, DiLorenzo dedicated the book "to all the victims of socialism--past, present, and future."And future, remember.Highly recommended.

I have dozens of books on socialism, its principles, & how it works. This is, by far, the most succinct, clear, concise & comprehensive one. It is not the hype or propaganda promises that compose most treaties on socialism. It is a concise examination of it & how it actually works with real people in a real world. It is consistent with all that I have learned about it & all that I have observed. It is a book that everyone faced with socialism should read before being bombarded with socialism's idealistic hype. We can wish it could deliver an unrealistic paradise, but must face the fact that it is basically flawed & cannot do that without considerable restructuring to accommodate the reality of dealing with actual human beings without mass murdering millions of them & creating an unhealthy & paranoid society.

This is a well written book going directly at the heart of the shortcomings of socialism. The history of socialism for delivering real benefits to people is appalling. Too many people do not understand this. In fact, most young people have a foggy understanding of socialism in general. But DiLorenzo's book is easy to read, quickly gets to his point and is truly devastating to socialism. And it is short and can be read in just a few hours. For those who favor socialism; to defend honestly defend your position you have to address the arguments DiLorenzo makes against the free market or true capitalism (not crony capitalism). :You will be well rewarded in reading this book by increasing your understanding of socialism. And you will also have a better understanding of why Venezuela is collapsing before our eyes today.

Tom DiLorenzo has outdone himself and this brief work may last in history with the likes of Bastiat's The Law and Hazlitt's Economics In One Lesson for putting together so many critical lessons in such a short read; and in doing so in such a way the layman can easily understand. I was required to purchase this text for an introductory Occupational Epidemiology course. It is an introductory and short text that hits the main points but does not have the most depth.

Very good

Beware that Amazon will rip you off and sell you the 1989 edition if you click Kindle edition when viewing the 2004 second edition. I'm going to try and get my money back. Don't buy this! The newer edition is what you need!

The book is neat and clean. Should I say more?I don't think so. This is all I need to say. Thanks.

It explains very clearly all concepts. It includes a good section on exposure and dose modelling. It includes many examples.

Prompted by the September, 2017 death of a WW-2 "Band of Brothers" brother, Technical Sergeant Donald Malarkey (survivor of the famed "Easy Company" /506th Parachute Infantry Regiment/101st Airborne Division), and after re-watching the HBO series, a reading of Winters' own memoir seemed appropriate. The Winters book, along with the superb Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks series should be the complete package. It's not.Unfortunately, "Beyond Band of Brothers" does not really take the reader "beyond" the 10-segment television series at all. The post-war Winters was a successful businessman and his book reads like an enthusiastic and sometimes superficially ruminative infomercial. If accurately portrayed in the book, Winters is psychologically unidimensional. He doesn't seem that way in the t.v. show.Winters was obviously a brave, dedicated and highly motivated leader, but he's not an appealing memoirist. As a literary work, the book is undistinguished. As a supplement to BoB on HBO, it adds nothing. Anecdotes, observations and insights into his formative years would help. So would more in-depth comments on his wartime comrades. The overly detailed technical military details are already standard knowledge: why dilate on them? Where are the details that only Richard Winters the man would know and could reveal before it's too late? Now, we'll never know.

Great book for history buffs of the European WWII campaign. Major Winters shares very detailed stories of the experiences he and his "brothers" endured. The opinions of his and others' behavior are genuine and unbiased, giving honest credit - and criticism - wherever it is due, regardless of whether he was speaking of friend or foe. The only improvement I would add to this book would be maps and diagrams of some of the more detailed operations, as it's hard to envision maneuvers and positioning of personnel from text alone. A deluxe edition with news journalists' photos of the sites would be an easy five stars. On a side note, the mini-series "Band of Brothers" (free for Amazon Prime members) is a great companion to this book. It follows the story closely, taking very little poetic license. I alternately watched an episode, then read a chapter or two to fully understand the action and empathize with the characters.

I just finished watching HBO's Band of Brothers (for the third time) and thought this book would be great to get into right away. I was not disappointed. It filled in some of the blanks left by the series and elaborated on more details not in the HBO series. If I had to go to war I'd want someone like Dick Winters as my immediate commanding officer. As the soldiers under him said "I'd follow him into hell". If you like war stories, liked the HBO series, you ought it to yourself to read this book......note I also read Band of Brothers by Ambrose a number of years ago. Recommend that one highly as well.

I've always been a fan of the original Band of Brothers that left me wanting more. I'm so pleased that Dick Winters sought to complete the circle with this wonderfully written and factual account of Echo company and the hero's that comprised it. Mr. Winters answered many questions raised by the original series and wrapped up what became of all the survivors. What a group of exceptional men! This book gives hope that men of quality continue to stand up and be counted when the need arises. This is a unique history book written in the first person. I encourage you to buy it, read it, and be enlightened.

What a wonderful interesting true story from an awful young commander who went above and beyond his job , in this harrowing anxious , terrifying ordeal at a young man . This type of real war story and his leadership were amazing , along with the men in Easy company ! Worth almost any price charged price. Tiff you haven't seen " Band of Brothers , please do ! He cared so much about his men . This man is the epitome of the description of a rock solid beautiful human being . I can't recommend this story more ! A gentleman and what a story !!! I'm sooooo impressed with DickinWinters ! Thank you for your service and the men of Easy Co.is just not enough , not in the least ....

I enjoyed reading this book immensely. Dick Winters was an inspiration to many during a very difficult time. I can't even imagine what it must have been like during these battles. Dick shared them well. It was a blessing to read this book. It helped me understand WW2 more fully & appreciate the unspeakable times these soldiers went through.

Major Dick Winters account of the greatest Paratrooper unit in WW II is worth every penny and minute you spend on this great book. Winters was in fact THE MAN. His leadership tricks and views are hardcore right on the money - when it counts in LIFE & DEATH situations. Read it (even if you are not military). Yep.
