I love this book! It is very helpful! I love that it is hard cover and the rubber-ish feel to it. The dust cover it nice but I always take it off when using because it gets in the way, always sliding off, etc.. Very nice cloth that comes with this(we aren't opening ours though). Amazon sells this at an unbeatable price!

Since Diamond and Pearl, the "official" Pokemon guides (produced by the Pokemon Company and published/distributed by Prima) have been released in two volumes, with the Pokedex being included in the second volume, with the exception of Platinum's guide which was thicker and did have a Pokedex. So I bought the X/Y guide realizing and expecting this. What is annoying is that, while pages for each location have a listing of the Pokemon available, there's no index at the back that lists Pokemon by name and points out what routes they are found in for cross-referencing. There's also no listing of attacks and items at the back, just a TM list and info on what the Marts sell. I know that the Diamond/Pearl guide had these lists, because I just checked it as I'm writing this.The guide is hardcover and smaller in terms of page size, about the size of a novel. Which means that the maps and font are smaller and it's much harder to lay flat opened to a specific page. I don't see why they went this route with this guide, especially for reasons that I'll cover later. As a walkthrough, it is fairly detailed, pointing out items, listing (but not identifying on the map) hidden items, and showing the locations of each enemy trainer and the number of Pokemon they have (but not their complete rosters; then again, these guides have never included them). Full rosters are given for major opponents, and detailed strategies are given for Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. The walkthrough only covers up to the Elite Four - post-game matters will likely be in the next volume. It covers how to use the game's touch screen and communication features. So as a walkthrough, it's okay - not great, since I would have liked to see an alphabetical list of available Pokemon as well as details about the attacks and items - after all, this is a new generation of games, so there's going to be new examples of both.So, why did I say this guide was of poor quality? Its construction. Like many of the recent Pokemon guides, this one is printed on semi-glossy paper with poor-quality ink that tends to smear. I was hoping that since this is a supposed "collector's edition" that they would have used upgraded ink to print it. What is worse, however, is the horrible binding job that they did with my particular copy. The back cover and last page of the book has separated from the rest of it after less than a month of use, which is inexcusable. And no, I was not rough with handling the book. The binding came apart through normal use. Of course, the fact that it is a hardcover made using it normally (as a guide that you need to keep opened to a particular page) difficult.I'd really rather they stuck with the old-style (paperback, full-size) Pokemon guides (except with better quality ink, of course). Because not only is this hardcover edition smaller and harder to keep open to a specific page, apparently it was designed solely as a collector's item and wasn't durable enough to withstand, you know, actually using it as a guide.

Any time there is a new Pokémon game coming out, I always preorder the guide book with it. It's just what I've been doing since Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The best guide book I ever bought was the one for Platinum. It was huge, but something was missing from it. When Black and White came out with their Hardcover guide books, it was perfect.When I bought this book, I was expecting something similar and in-between Platinum up through Black and White 1&2. The only thing this book offers you is a simple walkthrough of the game. There is nothing in the back of the book about the Kalos Region pokédex. Nothing on how they evolve or when. On top of that, some of the info in the book is also wrong, such has some of the Horde info. Much better off using Serebii for that sort of info. The book itself, while conveniently hardcover, is also quite small. Certainly nothing compared to the former guidebooks.If you're looking for just a walkthrough, this book is fairly ok for it. But if you're in need of more than that, you'd be better off using the internet for it and saving your money.

Three stars because the information contained within the book is laid out well, and is as good as the guides before it.I've read a lot of the past reviews and have this to say.1) No regional 'Dex is unacceptable. I got it, most of us probably don't need a national pokedex in a volume 1, but c'mon, give us a regional Dex.2) The size is atrocious. This half size book means they likely did half ass research on wether or not this book would be appreciated at this size. Let me tell you now, it's not! The larger books can lay open in my lap while I am playing; this small one is an inconvenience at numerous levels, but mostly because it keep flopping shut on me.3) A couple of the features from previous books have been left out. The main one is the "day of the week guide" and the easy 2 page summary guide, usually found at the beginning of the old books. Those two features are exceptionally helpful and are, sadly, absent.All in all, the information provided is mostly complete, there wasn't a lot of info on the legendaries birds, which would have been helpful (like how to track them?!?!), but I still used the book extensively.

This book made me laugh. It was enormously entertaining.I have a lot of "dooms-dayer" and "prepper" friends and family members who are strong believers in the apocalypse and that right now is the time to stock up on food, water, guns, ammo, cigarettes, and tampons.And before this book, those ideas just didn't speak to me. Not even remotely.So I read it to become more educated about the mindset of the "dooms-dayers," and perhaps gain some insight on how to best prepare for an apocalyptic scenario, or at least the moment WSHTF.Mission accomplished. This book delivered both outcomes for me. It also cracked me up, and made me quite grateful for my life, however temporary it may be.After reading it, I walked away feeling all the more committed to living my life with the intention of making the world better, as opposed to preparing for my potential doom or limping survival.Here's a beautiful, apt, and terrifying snippet that sums up the essence of what I gleaned from the book:"On every highway, there's a drunk driver hurtling at 80 miles an hour in two tons of steel. In every neighborhood, there's a thief armed with a deadly weapon. In every city, there's a terrorist with a bloody agenda. In every nuclear country, there's a government employee sitting in front of a button. In every cell in our body, there's the potential to mutate into cancer. They are all trying to kill us. And they don't even know us. They don't care that if they succeed, we will never know what tomorrow holds for us.The tragedy of life – robbing it of its fullness and brilliance – is the knowledge that we might die at any moment. And though we schedule our lives so precisely, with calendars and day planners and mobile phones and personal information management software, that moment is completely beyond our control.Death is a guillotine blade hanging over our heads, reminding us every second of every day that this life we treasure so much is no more important to the universe than those of the 200,000 insects each of us kills with the front of our car every year.Nature knows no tragedies or catastrophes. And all we can ask for, all we can hope for, all we can beseech God for, is to win a few battles in a war we will ultimately lose."Neil is a great writer, and on top of these eloquent insights, he has hilarious stories peppered all throughout this. It's almost like reading a too-true fiction. I definitely recommend reading it if you're interested in the subject.With that being said, I do not agree with the deliberately provocative title, even though I think it's a great curio. This book is not likely to save my life - but some of the ideas this book offered just might be worth pursuing well before the moment WSHTF.

This is kind a wild read, but it's a good read. If you are a prepper, or just worried about where this world is headed, read this book. As someone who would not describe myself as paranoid, I often feel paranoid when I am buying bugout bag items or working on survival skills. Reading this book put a lot of those things in perspective and gave me a lot of good ideas about how to avoid becoming a victim in the event the word goes to sh!t. This is not a survival book. It's a journey worth reading.

This book is really about the author's journey to self-reliance in disaster scenarios with some of his "aha" moments along the way. It has a "Game" flavor to it if you've read that book. I suspect some of the research is now pretty much out of date since it was done a decade ago . In the book, the author lives in fear and addresses it with learning and experience. It's a pretty awesome journey. This is a single guy's view and much doesn't apply much to working families so it came up short for me. If you are single, have lots of free time (e.g. no full-time job), focus, and the money, you too can do all the things in this book in a 2-3 years.

I really enjoy Strauss's style of writing. It's a fun narrative with factual information intertwined. I have read just about every book he has written at this point. Great, great book. Much like The Game, and The Truth, Emergency is written in an autobiographical fashion. Neil Strauss dives deep into the world of Survivalist culture.Neil has a way to write in an entertaining, easy-to-read manner. While the book isn't exactly a step-by-step guide, Neil dives into the many different forms of survivalist culture, from Elites getting second passports to lock-picking expert "urban survivalists". Towards the end, Neil utilizes all the skills he's picked up along the way, stepping into action when a true catastrophic event lands on his doorstep.It wouldn't be a Neil Strauss book without discussing relationships. Neil includes how his ever-consuming survivalist lifestyle affected the relationship for better and for worse with his then-girlfriend. Very entertaining.Even if you read it for strictly entertainment purposes, you will find this book amazing. If you are a fan of Neil Strauss, I highly recommend this book.

Great book, not what I expected. As a matter of fact, at first skip I thought I made a mistake. I was looking for lots of survival techniques and tricks. Turns out, it is about how to learn all these things, and what you might not have thought was necessary to learn. So in the end, I read it straight through, and was impressed by what he accomplished.

About the Author

Philippa Gregory is the author of many New York Times bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. Many of her works have been adapted for the screen including The Other Boleyn Girl. Her most recent novel, The Last Tudor, is now in production for a television series. She graduated from the University of Sussex and received a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where she is a Regent. She holds honorary degrees from Teesside University and the University of Sussex. She is a fellow of the Universities of Sussex and Cardiff and was awarded the 2016 Harrogate Festival Award for Contribution to Historical Fiction. She is an honorary research fellow at Birkbeck, University of London. I've read other books in this series, and all out of sequence. I quite enjoyed this one, which tells the story of Elizabeth of Woodville's mother, and the early part of the War of the Roses. It helped me with the background of how the wars began, and humanized the major players of both parties. It is much the same as others in the series, in terms of writing style. I did get rather tired of all the Wheel of Fortune (tarot) references, but Jacquetta and her family, and certainly Margaret of Anjou and Henry, the Royals throughout most of the book, made more trips around that mythical wheel than most can imagine.I enjoyed this novel, and the series, because it's well researched and tells the famous events of a fascinating time in history from the imagined point of view of the women. Histories have been written largely by men, and Gregory tells the perspective and roles of women, and n the process, humanizes the events and the eras.

I have read several Phillippa Gregory novels, and her works about the various women of power in early England are without question where she shines. The White Queen in particular spoke to me, and when I found out she'd written The Lady of the Rivers I was anxious to delve back into the world of Melusina's descendants. This book did not disappoint! A romantic tale with the backdrop of a terrible war, mystery, magic, and ambitious women. I love love love the way this author is so adept at describing the balance a woman must find within herself always, in a world ruled by men. She writes about these women in a way that helps me learn about myself as a woman. Yes, I've read the reviews of people disgusted with Phillippa Gregory's account of events that are,as they say, historically inaccurate, sold as truth disguised in fiction. I say, WHO CARES? These stories are amazing. No one can ever be sure of events that transpired hundreds of years ago. Not even of yesterday, to be sure. I enjoy these tales, they are thought provoking and interesting and they take me to a time when women died for the pleasures we take for granted. Do yourself a favor. Disregard the negativity, jump in head first.

The Cousin's War Series. Even though this is labeled Book #3 I really consider it more like book #1. I've read the series in succession but the way they were written the author does biographical background on each House member after the White Queen was written. For redundancy reasons I've been telling friends to read The Lady of the Rivers, The White Queen, The Red Queen and the White Princess. There was another book in this series but I wasn't interested; I think it would probably be placed either before Lady of the Rivers or just after. No matter how the reader decides in which order to absorb the books, they're all very detailed and in many respects the reader will appreciate the repetition of some of the historical details in each book. It helped me relate to the events and how each House experienced each event. I really enjoy Jacquetta and her family the most.

This is a wonderful work of historical fiction of a woman of historical significance but about whom little has been written, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, who marries John of Lancaster, the Duke of Bedford, who brought her to England. They also brought with them Margaret of Anjou, who would marry King Henry VI. When the Duke died, Jacquetta would make a love match, secretly marrying Richard Woodville, the Duke's squire. Both would weather the storm that followed the disclosure of their marriage and would be loyal supporters of the Lancastrian court. In particular, Jacquetta would become a fast friend to Queen Margaret.This is Jacquetta's story, and what an amazing life she had! She managed to survive those tumultuous times, have many children, enjoy a happy marriage, and live to see the court transfer its power from the House of Lancaster to the House of York. She would also see her daughter, Elizabeth Woodville, widowed with two children, catch the eye of Edward, the newly crowned king of the House of York. The rest is history.The author brings Jacquetta's story to life with vivid imagery. It is so interesting to read, made more so by her place in the annals of history and the author's deft writing style. I could not stop turning the pages. Usually woman of this era end up as mere footnotes in history with marriages, births, and deaths recorded and little else. Now, this little known woman has been resurrected, and what is known has been fleshed out, making for a three dimensional woman who lived life to the fullest at a time of great unrest in England. Jacquetta's life is truly the stuff of legend.Those who enjoy historical fiction should find this book noteworthy. The author has pulled out all the stops with this well-researched, skillfully written characterization of a woman that time had but all forgotten.

Very well researched facts. I have watched the tv serial The White Queen and then The White Princess. Was curious to find out more about their lineage which led me to The Lady of the Rivers, which is the story of the mother of the White Queen. All these people actually existed and are linked to the Tudor Dynasty and hence the The infamous King Henry VIII. If you are interested in English history, you will enjoy this series of books. I did!

This book is another extremely well written work by Philippa Gregory. She is so knowledgeable about this time period, and she does a good job balancing the backstory and history of the Cousins War with the personal story of her main character, Jacquetta. If you love royal historical fiction, you'll love this book! I love the first person perspective, as it makes me feel connected to Jacquetta. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
