MVC can be implemented by hand (roll your own), but as your application grows (with perhaps tens of states to manage) it quickly becomes unwieldy to continue to do so. Therefore, just as there are various frameworks/libraries for facilitating server-side MVC, many JavaScript frameworks/libraries have emerged for enabling client-side MVC, including Knockout, Backbone, Ember, and Angular. However, what sets this book apart is that the authors argue against using a client-side MVC framework. Having used several client-side MVC frameworks over the past few years, I can appreciate the stance taken by the authors.Just a couple of years ago, Knockout and Backbone were considered de facto standards for client-side MVC. Then, almost out of nowhere, came Angular, supported by Google’s seemingly infinite programming and marketing resources. But Angular is new and is still undergoing radical changes from release to release. As a result, documentation is often lagging and there are multiple ways to do the same thing: legacy approaches often co-exist with newer approaches, as if to see what sticks. Furthermore, each of these “automatic two-way data binding” frameworks requires the programmer to accept some rigidity in exchange for convenience.In case you’re wondering, it’s clear that the authors aren’t “roll your own” advocates. It’s just that they don’t want to invest in an immature or rigid client-side MVC framework. Although Angular is gaining traction, as of now there are no client-side MVC frameworks that can reasonably be termed as mature. As evidence of the authors’ level-headedness, consider their testing approach, detailed in Appendix B. Here, the authors write, “Node.js has many test frameworks that have years of use and refinement. Let’s be wise and use one instead of hacking our own.” The key here is the framework’s maturity. Since there are several reasonably mature JavaScript testing frameworks, the authors do not shy away from using them. After briefly describing jasmine-jquery, mocha, nodeunit, patr, vows, and zombie, the authors decide to go with nodeunit and describe how to set up a JavaScript testing framework for their SPA. Similarly, the authors use jQuery, which is another highly mature JavaScript framework for document object model (DOM) manipulation. Additionally, the authors use a pure JavaScript stack, with Node.js and MongoDB on the server side.One upside of not using a client-side MVC framework is that you’re left with little choice but to become an expert at JavaScript. This book certainly helps with that as it goes step-by-step, building an SPA end to end. One of the book’s highlights is its overview of JavaScript in chapter 2. The authors do a tremendous job of explaining concepts like variable scoping and variable and function hoisting and closure, and provide new insights into the inner workings of JavaScript, such as the execution context object. As a complement to chapter 2, the authors present a useful set of coding standards in Appendix A.In closing, here’s a sampling of some of the interesting approaches used in this book:-The HTML file is merely a shell with no content at all. All of the HTML is converted to JavaScript strings (using regular expressions) and embedded within the JavaScript code.-The use of callbacks is reduced via the use of jQuery global custom events.-The book recommends feeling a lot less guilty about using pixels since browsers have started implementing pixels as relative units and pixels are often more reliable than traditional relative units like em or percent.-The book recommends testing views and controllers manually (although user interface (UI) testing automation frameworks have matured and I’ve had considerable success with the combination of Protractor, Jasmine, and AngularJS).-The authors discourage the use of embedded template libraries like Underscore.js, but encourage the use of toolkit-style template systems such as those provided by Handlebars, Mustache, and Dust.

I'm only on chapter 2 of this book and I decided to review it because after only two chapters this book has been worth far more money than I paid for it. I'm new to web development and javascript - started learning in the past six months - although I have many years of software development on large enterprise systems under my belt so I came into this with a solid knowledge of basic programming principles e.g. loops, variables and some OOP. I have gone through so ,many resources for learning javascript which I will say is not an easy language to learn and so far here's what I've learned about javascript: the learning resources available whether books or videos are mostly woefully inadequate. They're either way too basic for me or they are incomprehensible which tells me that the author does not have a good grasp of the material. I have been extremely frustrated in my quest to learn javascript beyond the basics of easy DOM manipulation.Enter chapter 2 of this book. The explanation of scope and objects as they pertain to JS was clear, concise and complete. It was like somebody opened a window and let in the light and fresh air. For this alone I give the book 5 stars. I now feel like I actually have a solid foundation for moving forward in JS.Certainly for me this book was absolutely a worthwhile purchase.

This is good book that can teach you JavaScript programming, but the example that is used throughout the whole book in my opinion is too big and in moments gets confusing.The beginning is great, the explanation of how JavaScript works and how browsers are handling JavaScript code is one of the best that I have ever read.The part with the chat application that is used for explaining SPA is too big in my opinion, I wasn't able to follow the code, because sometimes it was spreading on 3 pages.The end part for Node.js and MongoDB has nice explanation.Pros:1) Excellent JavaScript introductory. (for more advanced JavaScript developers)2) Good advice's and reasons for using clean code JSLint3) Nice explanation of Node.js and MongoDBCons:1) Very long example that is spreading over 2/3 of the book2) Lack of more examples, experiences and practices where SPA can be usedFrom this the 3 stars.Like I said in the beginning this is a good book for intermediate/advanced JavaScript developers that want to learn SPA development with pure JavaScript and jQuery.

The book has lots of twists and turns and is written from Cathy's warm, very loving but honest perspective. I just loved every minute. All I can say is WOW! What a great book! As always, Cathy Glass writes with warmth & sensitivity about an difficult subject for many -- gender identity.Stevie is a naive 14-year-old boy trying to decide where he fits in the world. He struggles to decide if he is a boy or a girl. His grandparents, who raised him, are not at all tech savvy, nor do they understand what stevie is going through. Because of this, Stevie has no supervision of his online activity until he comes to live with Cathy. Without giving away the story, I'll just say the damage has already been done by the time he moves in. Cathy has her work cut out for her to get to the bottom of what's happened. This book reads like a thriller with so many twists & turns. I can't wait for the next book!

Every animal in the herd listens when the herd is listening. To use silence so well: if I could choose for people one attribute of elephants, I'd choose this." I read this book before departing for Thailand to study elephants. It is a disturbing book, but I recommend it. We need to treat these noble beasts better and it's not easy considering their size and how much they must consume in a day. It all got me started on a quest to learn more about Elephants. We found several elephant rescue camps in Thailand that use tourist money to acquire urban elephants and ones that are used in Berma for logging...very bad for their backs. We signed up for three days where we would have our own elephant and would have to care for it. I found myself bonding with my Minoy, a large female that was assigned to me. It's hard to believe, but she bonded with me as well. When I left there was a very large tear in her eye. Elephants are amazing animals. This book was helpful to me in understanding how elephants communicate. I could feel them "talkin" to each other through my legs, but could not hear the subsonic messages.

Who knew that elephants are so sensitive to sound frequencies far below what our ears can detect? Not only that, they have some kind of telepathic connection as well. These gentle giants are extremely emotional, loyal, passionate and compassionate towards one another. They form tight family bonds and grieve for their dead. What a brilliant book. I loved reading about Katy Payne's experiences. I feel deeply moved by her point of view. Not only was it educational and informative, her expression touches the heart deeply. Thank you Katy for a wonderful inspiring book, sharing your experiences with these majestic beings, giving us insight into their habits and behavior.

I was introduced to Ms Payne through an interview with her on a podcast and I was fascinated by her story. This book filled in many of the pieces. Its beautiful in its observations and it is an interesting view about the life of a scientist studying among locals. I really enjoyed this.

I chose this because I love elephants and am deeply concerned they will not be on this earth much longer. Katy Payne has done enormous work studying them, but it's been 13 years since she published this book. Thousands of elephants have been slaughtered by poachers for the ivory trade, including many she studied. It makes me sick to read about them.

Elephants sense so much of the world that's below our hearing, and their understanding must form the basis for their family and social lives. We can learn a great deal from them, Katie Payne helps us do that. Her patient observations and her dedication are truly inspiring.

I bought this book based on the author's reputation and experience. I'll save you 6+ hours of your time. Reduce sugar, increase vegetables, reduce meat, and incorporate an exercise program. Sound like anything you've heard before? Additionally, the first six chapters covers a genetic overview regarding diets that could be reduced to one chapter to save you the suspense. This book missed the mark and I see no innovative or new strategies presented. Eat your veggies, reduce sugar and meat, and work out. There you go.

This is dated. After reading his new book Plant Paradox, this book contains lots of conflicting information due to his more recent research. Good luck figuring out what to eat.

I saw Dr. Gundry for 1.5 years, and 3 office visits. I did not get better in his diet, but continued putting on weight and feeling even more exhausted. He kept on blaming me for doing something wrong. However, after doing food sensitivity tests with another Dr., it turns our that the eggs and shellfish were a huge problems, and the diet made me sicker. I had health issues with my digestive system that Dr. Gundry never diagnosed, and the diet would not have fixed it. Also , I really needed thyroid medication, and he also did not see that, and kept on sending me home, with "eggs should be ok." Too much time spend suffering and feeling judged by him without getting better. Not a good diagnostic doc, nor compassionate or a good listener or any good for diagnosing gastrointestinal issues. It's important to find what diet works for a patient, instead of blaming the patient when it doesn't work. Very disappointing.

I clicked on what apparently was some paid /sponsored 'health report' by this doctor appearing on the front page of Yahoo that headlines 'cut your cravings'. It is still playing in the background as I type this. This alleged Doctor is talking circles and circles and mentioning his famous clients (like Tony Robbins!) instead of just getting to the point of the article, which is the particular foods that are not good for you or impeding your weight loss goals. He'll tell us in just a minute. Wait, oh, let me talk about myself some more. This come-on vague sales pitch about how all the pearls of knowledge are just around the corner, he continues to talk about himself and show the same pics of himself over and over. His video is promising to share the secrets of a healthier diet without ever getting to it. This gets real old, real fast. The book is the same thing-- lots of filler without a lot of fact. The actual info he wants to share could fit on a page. I don't trust a source that has to be this cutesy and vague.

I have been using Dr. Gundry's products for the past six weeks. I have found some limited results, and I think am willing to keep trying with the products I have. I am giving this review three stars because of Dr. Gundry's marketing techniques. These techniques have raised red flags to the point that I wonder if this isn't a scam and he is a QUACK. When I have ordered the products, the web site keeps trying to get me to order more and more. Certainly, it does not seem professional. Yesterday was the final straw.. I received a telephone call with a caller ID that was a local number. It was someone from Gundry's group trying to sell me more product. Super red flags for me!

what a fool I was to buy this book. First, I watched a video where he said to never, ever eat any soy! Then in his book, soy recipes all over the place. What a fraud.

Just malarkey. I bought the book because in the video advertisement he tells you to avoid soy. I'm a vegetarian. I thought, "what else can I eat?". More than half the recipes contain soy. I guess the up side is I have a few more tofu recipes.

Be careful before implementing this diet, or buying his products. Watching his videos, I noticed that there seemed to be contradictions in what he was saying. What I also noticed, was that there was NO WAY to 'rewind' the video and watch the questionable section again without watching the whole long video (which also includes numerous sections tooting his own horn about how wonderful he is, tales of all the cheers and applause that he gets). Seems that maybe they don't want you to do this. So, I recorded his entire video. And watched it again, carefully listing all the questionable things. Then checked against what he later said, and what he has written in his books. You WILL find contradictions, which plainly make it clear that what he says in order to sell you his books and products, are probably just a lot of misinformation, AKA, LIES. So do your research FIRST. You might be able to implement some of his suggestions into your life, but there are simply too many red flags here. There is no way to list everything here. So you have to read his material, and listen to his videos, to learn the inherent problems in what he preaches. Simple examples? Look at his meal suggestions. He has recommended eating beans, peppers, and other things that he also strongly recommends REMOVING FROM YOUR DIET! JMHO. Do your own research. Don't believe the hype. Remember, if something seems too good, or easy to be true, it probably is.

This was a lovely, light read with quick dialogue and a fast pace of action. I found it to be a little darker than the first book, with a bit more graphic violence. I bought it in the Kindle version, and found it totally unsuitable for reading on the commute because I simply didn't want to put it down. This second novel is episodic in nature, with a few mini-stories tied together, but I didn't realize this until more than halfway through.For those of you new to Ms. Taylor's series, please read the first book before picking up this one. A Symphony of Echoes is heavily referential to Volume I. There's enough explanation that a first time reader will understand the story, but having read the other first will give better understanding of what's going on.Somewhere along the line, Ms. Taylor has become a bit more repetitive with her St. Mary's tropes than necessary, almost crossing into the annoying... yes, yes, you don't need to tell us yet again that if St. Mary's is involved something must be blowing up, on fire, etc.Those minor criticisms aside, this was an amusing read. Max has grown since the last book, and continues to adapt and change as this story progresses. She realizes some hard truths about herself, relationships, and the consequences of decisions. Importantly, the other characters progress in their life journey, as well -- I can't abide stories where any of the characters, whether primary or secondary characters remain cardboard props -- and Ms. Taylor's writing satisfies nicely on this point.As usual, my recommendations don't deal too much with the plot of a story itself because I don't want to inadvertently give away a spoiler. But I will say that I'm eagerly awaiting Volume III (wherein we travel to Troy!) and pleased to have this book in my collection. It is definitely worth the purchase price!

You know how it feels when you discover a good author, a wordsmith? That's how I felt when I first read Jodi's "Just One Damned Thing After Another" What a treat! The lady can write! And she can be laugh-out-loud funny. And in "A Symphony of Echoes" she's back to her old game. Another winner! Adventure, mystery, romance, humor... what's not to like!? Funny you should ask. Her stories move along a quick pace and are fun to read until she gets caught up in the past. Things slow down a bit, there, it seems history is a place she likes to wallow. In her defense, these tales * do * involve time-travel adventures so one might expect a bit of history to creep in if for no other reason than to keep things neatly oriented. But for me, there are places where the story slows. Please understand, it's more than worth the few places where historical details get a little thick, and if you're into history I suspect you will welcome the extra fabric she provides in her stories. In any case, I'm a fan, and I eagerly look forward to her next release. Do yourself a favor and check out her work!

*** History is A Symphony of Echoes. Every little action has huge consequences. ***This series is a little bit on the sporadic side. I’m quite a linear thinker and so jumping about in time can be a little discombobulating at times. To jump around from London in the days of Jack the Ripper to sometime in the future and then back to hang out with Mary Queen of Scots, well it seems so patched together sometimes.I very much enjoy the time jumps and seeing different time periods and how much trouble the historians can get into within them. Whenever you think it is going to be a quick and easy jump to check out some gardens something completely horrible goes wrong and you end up running for your lives in this series.I’m enjoying all of the different jaunts into history. I like the time traveling bad guys who are working for their own means to and end. I like that being a historian now seems like the most dangerous job one could ever have. But……the part that is keeping from really loving this is that some time in the book you know the drama llama is going to show upMax and her lovely fellow seems to have some sort of catastrophic misunderstanding that basically breaks them up for a part of time and then at some point just as quickly as they were ripped apart they are flung back together. It just seems so completely unnecessary.There is also something that happened at the end that really made me feel awkward towards the MC. I don’t care that history had already happened and that is the way it went down. It is one thing to know the history and another to think that the MC help facilitate in anyway what happened especially when it involved the possible rape of a historical character. It really made me dislike Max and the choices she is making ‘for the greater good/history’For the most part it is funny and fun and I really do love the dialogue and how quick on her feet snarky Max is. “Dr Maxwell. Why are you wearing a red snake in my office?’ ‘Sorry, sir. Whose office should I be wearing it in?”Things like this crack me up throughout the book. But the story is just missing something I can’t really put my finger on to but it from okay to really great.Still there is Troy to explore in the next book so I’ll tag along on another adventure.
