 Dr. John E. Kaiser is president of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada (fellowship.ca), one of the country’s larger evangelical denominations. Prior to that appointment he developed and directed GHC Network (ghcnetwork.org), a movement for growing healthy congregations, under the auspices of the American Baptist Churches of the West (abcw.org), based in Northern California. As a former church consultant working with pastors and boards for eleven years to develop healthier churches, and now as a senior pastor of a mid-size church turnaround, one of the biggest barriers to overcome is lack of accountability and therefore lack of clarity in what is the problem we addressing and what are the solutions we working together toward. In the vast majority of churches pastors blame boards for lack of progress and boards blame pastors for lack of progress--and frankly, both are at least partially right because our systems don't clarify who is accountable for what and what does each part of the ministry team do (board, senior pastor, staff, congregation members).On the other hand, I also worked in a church with no real accountability for the pastor and saw how painful circumstances, which happen in every church, can result in pastors leading out of hurt and devastating a church when there is no accountability. The model Kaiser puts forward provides the best freedom for strong spiritual leadership and at the same time clarifies accountability lines so there is real, strong, effective accountability.I am blessed to currently be in a church that operates its governance and leadership teams in this manner and it has been the most positive experience I have ever had in a church leadership system! This works. This frees spiritual leadership. This helps a board know what it does and feel successful at it, knowing they are both supporting their pastor as they are called to do and fulfilling Biblical and practical safeguards in a positive manner. There is far more true accountability in this system and yet greater freedom to lead as well.

I liked this book very much. As a Church leader and Board member, I have often wondered why our structures are so dysfunctional. This book presents a straightforward plan, with examples of how to change this to bring glory to God and actually join with Him in the mission He expects us to help fulfill.The cover art could use a makeover, as I almost dismissed this book because it looked amateurish. I am so glad I didn't judge a book by its cover!

I am 5 chapters in to this book, and while the material is relevant and encouraging, I can't help but be distracted by the errors in digital copy. I wish the digital producer would have edited it before publication. There is one quote that is totally destroyed: "

I now rank "Winning on Purpose" among the top 10 books on church organizational life that I've read. The foundational premise is that Christians are to make disciples of Jesus. The way a local church organizes for ministry can hinder or assist in that mission.Kaiser dares to suggest that pastors, church boards, and the membership of the church are to be accountable for the mission. Accountability does not restrict or lay guilt on these persons, but in proper relationship to one another frees them to lead and serve in ways that will give them every opportunity to fulfill their God-given mission.The author does a good job of describing the limitations of how many traditional churches are organized. He is even better at defining and describing Accountable Discipleship through an organizational structure that can be adapted to a variety of traditions. It may well be the limitations of publishing did not allow him to go into more detail about how to move from a traditional, ineffective organizational model to the effective model he promotes. I would benefit from more suggestions about how to lead a church (as quickly as possible) from the former to the latter.Nevertheless, "winning on Purpose" should be taught in seminaries and continuing education seminars. It should not just on the book shelf of any pastor or church leader, but in their hands and a matter of urgent prayer and discussion in churches that have a desire to grow -- and a willingness to do what it takes to make disciples.

Did I mention humor?Whatever you do, Do. Not. Drink. Or. Eat. When. Reading!!! Diet Coke Zero does not make for a pleasant experience, when propelled, veryforcefully, from one's nasal passages. Likewise, I'll have to buy more Bounty paper towels and Windex tomorrow...You'd think I'd have learned this from the very beginning of The Kurtherian Gambit Universe, right? Hurumph!Once you start this one, you won't stop until you finish. Sleep? Overrated. How often does one find the perfect series of books, as in The Kurtherian Gambit Universe series? Eh? I rest my case!Five out of Five Stars! (Hey, Amazon! When do we get the new, better, upgraded review ratings that TKG Universe has earned?)

Nomad Mortis is the eight book in the Terry Henry Walton Chronicles (AKA the Nomad Chronicles). This is the second book in what is, arguably, the second arc of the Nomad story. The first arc was the survival of humanity, the growth of New Boulder and then the move to North Chicago. This took 6 books, all of which were compelling reads with great characters and a lot of thought put into the story arc. The seventh book was much less fulfillng but set the scene for the second arc which can be summarised as the war against the Forsaken (rogue vampires).In this book TH and crew grow their army (Force de Guerre [FDG]) and go to war against the Forskaen who are trying to turn the remnants of humanity into slaves and a food source. Vampires suck; literally. SInce the forsaken are organised a co-ordinated effort is required to beat them. This is the story of the first battle against the forsaken. I've given this a lower score not because of the characters or the writing in general but for a flaw in the story itself. These books are co-written with Michale Anderle of Kurtherian Gambit fame. The second KG arc was a triumph of energy enthusiasm, creativity and poor editing. Ideas came and went so quickly that very little was properly developed and stories went by so fast that the really interesting bits weren't properly investigated or developed. This wasn't a problem with the Nomad Chronicles up to this point. The general theme is well developed and conveys the idea that fighting the forsaken is lite splat a rat. Kill one and ten more pop up. Unfortunately a lot of ideas from the KG universe re-appear and then disappear just as quickly without adding to the story. The trip to Antarctica to visit New Schwabenland is a case in point. Yes KG universe readers should know about this but in this context all it adds to the story is that Antarctica is cold. Well duh!So I'm giving this three stars as it could have been more focused and the Anderle inspired bits didn't add tot he story but distracted from the theme. I still love the characters and can't wait to read more but this is the second book in a row that hasn't met the standards of the first six. Let's hope books 9 and 10 are back up to standard.

Awesome Craig writes stories that grab the reader, bringing you into the story as if you are going through all the events with the characters. In this fantastic installment, we find TH and the FDG having to root out evil and bring justice to the world. The characters are maturing and developing their own lives and you feel the emotional upheaval that Joseph is going through as he helps TH destroy his brothers, the Forsaken. Children are entering the FDG and parents have to face the terror of your child possibly dying, but are proud of their choices.It is everything that Awesome Craig puts into his novel: stellar characters, engrossing plot, and his incredible sense of humor that puts these novels head and shoulders above the rest. If this is what happens, this honor and sense of justice, to an individual who lives out in frozen Alaska, then maybe more of us should be spending time there.As always, I am waiting with tremendous eagerness for the next book. May you have peaceful days, Awesome Craig, that allow you to spend your time writing for us, your faithful fans!

I love how the various folks in this post WWDE world are responding to the challenges they are facing. I'm also reading all the other offshoots of the Kurtherian Gambit Series, and I find myself going back to the timeline to see when other things happened. I know that this series goes up to the time of Michael's return, but I guess I need to read the next book to see how TH's world jives with Michael's at that time.I loved every page of this book. Some things I was anxious about have been resolved (thanks, Craig.) Some things I never thought about were brought up and resolved, or are continuing to be a challenge. Can't wait to read the next book.

The Nomadic series has been excellent from the beginning, but this book out does them. It is very fast paced, and the main characters continue to grow. Not only must TH deal with very dangerous forsaken, but he must deal with this protective feelings over his daughter as she finds romance. The book is well written and hard to put down. The is exciting from the opening pages to very satisfying conclusion. It is among the very best of books in the Kurtherian universe.

Another satisfying chapter in the THW Chronicles of the KGU universe. This is volume 8 and the previous 7 volumes are must reads before this one or you'll feel lost.Definitely recommended to all the THW fans. All others– go buy & read the first 7 and then this one :D

It will be surprising to many people that the initial planning of humanity's first voyages to the stars has already begun. Those of us who grew up in the early days of the American space program, and whose vision of the future assumed that by the end of the twentieth century space flight would be commonplace and relatively easy, and who assumed that manned missions to Mars and further would be the next step within several years after the Apollo moon landings, became impatient with the slow and methodical pace of space exploration carried out in the immediate vicinity of Earth and by robotic probes sent about the Solar System- even though these missions were usually brilliantly planned and executed.This book brings the welcome news and consolation that, even though the first interstellar mission of any kind is probably still at least several decades away, imaginative and intelligent people are already working on the theoretical basis for such future voyages, and some of the engineering problems are being addressed. So at least we don't have to wait until the rest of the solar system has been explored to get an idea of how the next colossal task will be approached. Much of this work is being done by various research agencies associated with NASA, by the European Space Agency, and even by academics and assorted dreamers.Paul Gilster does an excellent job of explaining the current state of the planning for adventures to the closest stars, providing lucid descriptions of the work even now being done on such amazing concepts as laser-powered sails and antimatter drives. I have read a fair number of the popular scientific works intended to introduce laymen to difficult subjects (string theory, hyperinflation, etc.), and this volume is at least as clear and readable as anything I have seen by Allan Guth or Brian Greene. Besides being a primer, however, Centauri Dreams is also a fine piece of investigative reporting, since the author discusses the people who are doing this imaginative work and places their endeavors within an institutional context to show some of the bureaucratic and political hurdles that must be overcome.Mr. Gilster also relates interstellar planning to the development of notions of interstellar travel within science fiction, showing how fictional (and often very much misguided) thought has influenced scientific thought.Centauri Dreams is an exciting and important read. Highly recommended.

Centauri Dreams was a fun book for the futurist some time ago. The book enables the reader to let go into the future and think about interstellar space travel. The book is well structured and enlightening to the non-scientist and non-engineer. The technologies the author discusses are being researched but the practical applications will be years, decades, perhaps centuries, into the future for travel outside of the solar system --- even if we do now have a structured human effort to find an Earth-like planets outside of our solar system. The book has an associated blog that is fun too and has caused me to reflect upon the book from time-to-time. I recommend the book if you want to sit back and think about how your great-great grand children will cross the Milky Way Galaxy with a dash of realism and a dash of science fiction. Every great adventure begins with a map. This book is a creative map into the future of space travel.

In this book, the authors surveys the state of the art in unmanned probes to Alpha Centauri, from the gigantic Daedalus probe, to tiny,nanomechanical needle probes,which would assemble sensors and communication gear from local resources. This book, and the related blog of the same name are worthwhile reading for those who contemplate exploring the universe.

A well researched book that takes a realistic look at how we might one day explore the nearest stars. And this is a very bigdream indeed. The problems with making such a mission work are daunting. But the book doesn`t dive into science fiction, atleast not much.The book takes a realistic look at not only the possible systems that could send a probe on an interstellar mission, but at themassive problems that must be solved. The truely mind boggling distance to the nearest star is only the most obvious of theseproblems.
