About the Author

American born Luqman Ahmad is a life long Sunni Muslim, the son of converts to Islam. He is a writer, consultant, and until recently, has been the Imam of a Northern California mosque for twenty years. This book by Imam Luqman A. Ahmad is a must read for those desirous of understanding the condition of African American Muslims in 21st century America. While some readers may feel uncomfortable with the author's direct, unapologetic style, I find it refreshingly honest and a necessary, overdue commentary on the marginalization of African America Muslims by the immigrant Muslim community and at times, ourselves, since the 1980's.

This book is extremely insightful and informative. Mr. Ahmad provides a very honest and thoughtful analysis of the current challenges facing the Muslim community in America based upon his personal experiences and observations.He speaks to the historical dynamics of African American, other indigenous groups, and immigrant Muslims' interactions and the negative effects of psychological colonization. The book also includes pragmatic and islamically sound solutions to positively address these modern day issues.It personally resonated with me as a African American convert to Al-Islam. I highly recommend reading this book with an open mind and heart.

This is a much needed, honest and overdue conversation. Our human potential is tied up in the knowledge of self and the knowledge of God and the integrity of our place as defined by Allah (God), not even ourselves or others. Our historic experience as black people in the Western Hemisphere took a toll and left some residue in how we relate to others, but most importantly how we relate to ourselves and God Himself. Let's face the truths that Imam Luqman Ahmad lifted in Double Edged Slavery... and strive hard to be better in our service to Allah, self & then others.

Until the US Muslim community works on its internal issues we cannot fully deal with other issues going on outside the community. This book helps with that.

One of the most wonderful children's books I have seen... There are dozens if not hundreds in my house at the moment and this one stands alone. I am a big fan of this author. I went to one of his readings. He is very personable and the children loved him.As for the book, the illustrations are wonderful and like "All the Way to the Ocean" this book sends a powerful message regarding our environment. One of the things that I really like about this book is that the child does not have to know how to read. It is a book of illustration.The great thing about this is that it encourages the child to use their imagination in that they create the dialogue. This makes the book a personal and different experience for each child. They say that 10 people can look at the same picture and each will see something different. That is what this book does.

Joel Harper's new book is a refreshingly creative take on traditional storytelling. Providing 'just' visual prompts the book allows 'readers' to create the story as they flip the pages, the reader becomes an engaged maker of the story. Guided by stunningly beautiful illustrations, the story unfolds and takes shape through the imaginative collaboration of the young reader. And even though the plot is embedded in the images, the details can shift each time the story is engaged. Great book for my third grade son. We used it for a book report. He liked the "real" pictures. Well done. And I'm a Republican! Children need to learn to respect the political process.

My five year old has become obsessed with Obama since we received this book we love it

Another perfect book from National Geographic.

My son had to do a biography report on presidents and after reading reviews, thought that this would be a good fit. Has all the biographical details but an easy read for children in language that isn't intimidating and explained well. Definitely helped him with writing up his report, so much so, he became a real fan of the president.

I used the book for a school project with my grandson. He enjoyed the not so famous tidbits about Obama . For instance, Obama does not like to eat ice cream anymore after working in a ice cream store! He also enjoyed answering the questions at the end. The biography was presented with a child in mind.

My 2nd grader had a project on Barack Obama. This book gave almost every detail that he needed, and he could follow the information very well. There were also great definitions for terms that a 7-year-old would never know.

Kids really enjoy the facts and colorful pictures. Gets them more engaged on to learn about our favorite president.

Surprised my grandchildren with many books like this and the enjoy, share and talk about what they've learned.
