I'm re-reading the Ryan books in chronological order and this book suffers greatly being placed between Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October. Aside from mixing up character traits (Cathy wants a nanny in Patriot Games then suddenly doesn't in Red Rabbit), Clancy's personal interjections keep pulling me out of the narrative: every citizen of a NATO country fawns over Reagan and Thatcher; the UK's National Health Service is an irredeemable socialist disaster; journalists are a bunch of self-righteous, lefty buffoons (contrast with Marty Cantor's nuanced view in Patriot Games). Maybe I'm mis-remembering books I read 25 years ago but it's just so heavy-handed here. Some reviewers claim Clancy's writing got better with time but it certainly doesn't show in this one. The pacing is off and he constantly repeats himself. (Hey, did you know that Mary Pat likes to take risks but Ed is more cautious? You might have missed it the first five times and it's VERY important to the story.) I end up skipping most of the Introspective Andropov sections out of sheer boredom. In short, unless you're compelled to read *all* the Ryan books, skip this one. It adds nothing to your understanding of the characters except for maybe Mary Pat and Ed and even that's overwhelmingly tedious.

I am a huge Clancy fan and am in the middle of reading all the books he wrote over again and this has to be his worst. Unfortunately I didn't realize this was a prequel of sorts so I re-read them sort of in the wrong order. I was waiting for the typical "heart pounding out of my chest" part and never found it. Sure, there is about 3 pages that's piqued my interest towards the end, but the rest was just dialog and creating of characters whom I really didn't care about. I can see there was supposed to be at least one or two books after this one, but obviously he never got around to writing them. I agree with a previous reviewer - many parts of this did not seem like Clancy at all and that was sad and disappointing. I'll continue with The Bear and The Dragon and then the Rainbow Six books but not likely to read the co-authored books. It's just not in the Clancy style and this one didn't seem to be either.

I have been reading Tom Clancy novels since the late 80's. And I have always been impressed with his ability to mix global-political intrigue with action, but with technical knowledge/research. It has always been clever how he has developed characters sufficiently such that he can draw on enough previous definition to go back and write a prequel. Red Rabbit managed to combine factual history with fiction to make this a pleasurable, albeit, belated read in his Jack Ryan Sr. series. I have felt that some of his more recent books became (his passing 4 years ago is a great shame) a bit formulaic, as most authors tend to become, by the nature of time. However, this book was both engaging and a page turner because of, both the knowledge and links to familiar characters, and also it's resonance/ integration with historical fact

I believe that this is the last "Jack Ryan" book that Tom Clancy actually wrote, however, it takes place earlier in Mr. Ryan's history - after Patriot Games but before Hunt for Red October. It is a fictionalized account of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. However, who's to say where the history ends and the fiction begins. I like the fact that this book looked back to a time when Jack Ryan worked in the field, instead of sitting around the Oval Office, bemoaning the fact that he was the most powerful man in the world, yet constantly being told how to act like it.

The first half of this book is somewhat slow as it explores the inner workings of British, US, & Russian intelligence services. The Russians hatch a plot to kill the new Polish Pope, as he is, they feel, unduly influencing his former homeland. The KGB is in charge of the plot, but a man of conscience in their own ranks sticks his hand in the raincoat pocket of a CIA chief of station during a ride on a commuter train.

I found a website that has the reading order if you want to reach Jack Ryan chronologically instead of by publishing date because they don't work in tandem. This print version has pretty small text, maybe 10 font that is crammed together and covers pretty much the whole page. The book feels flimsy but has held up well. It has fewer pages only because of the font and print cramming so be prepared to really read 800 pages.

Mr. Wuffles! (Caldecott Medal - Honors Winning Title(s)), by David Wiesner

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4–Mr. Wuffles ignores all his fancy cat toys. Still sporting price tags, they line the hallway as he strolls by. But resting quietly among the feathers, balls, and mice is a tiny metal spaceship, and this catches his attention. His playful batting knocks around the alien explorers inside, causing bumps but no injuries. The ship's flying disks do not survive, however, and the aliens set out to explore the house and repair their craft. Barely escaping Mr. Wuffles's claws, they dash behind the radiator and discover primitive art of the cat's previous battles and make friends with the house's insects. The bugs help the aliens repair the spaceship, avoid capture, and fly away. Nearly wordless, the story is told through pictures and the languages of the ants and aliens, depicted by dashes and symbols. The book is fairly complex, best suited for elementary students, who will enjoy decoding the aliens' cryptographic alphabet. Wiesner humorously captures the curiosity and confusion of Mr. Wuffles and his human, who remains oblivious to the drama underfoot. The idea of a separate, tiny world next to ours makes a great premise, and Wiesner's engaging art and lively pacing carry the day. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Once again Wiesner dips into his irrepressible imagination to deliver a mostly wordless conceptual picture book where the mundane and the magical collide. Mr. Wuffles, an aloof, perspicacious black cat, takes no interest in his playthings, save one peculiar toy that looks something like a hobnail tea strainer. Closer inspection, like only Wiesner can provide, reveals that it is a miniature alien spacecraft experiencing mechanical trouble. Its little green passengers evade Mr. Wuffles and retreat to a hole beneath the radiator, where they discover a series of “cave paintings” immortalizing battles between the cat and troops of ants and ladybugs. The aliens and the bugs join forces and, speaking in rectangular pictographic word balloons (that some readers will thrill to decipher), hatch a plan to repair the spaceship, foil the feline, and return home. The drama plays out across long, low panels full of kinetic energy and comic detail, all captured in the artist’s careful watercolor renderings. In the end, the mission is successful and the aliens escape, but not without leaving behind a few reminders of their visit and an updated record of the epic conflict on the inner wall. Wiesner’s many fans will delight at poring over the detailed account of this master plan, again and again, discovering something new with each successive reading. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Wiesner is a three-time Caldecott winner. Three. Fans will be ready to pounce. Grades K-3. --Thom Barthelmess

#61,179 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book does not have a "story" just a bit of dialogue between the Aliens and the Bugs that help them... just symbols. So you must make up the words. But the artistry is such that it is easy to follow. And you can expand on the story as much as you like. We end up talking about how the two parties use pictures to communicate and even though they may not understand each other they understand how to solve the problem. The illustrations are amazing! I wasn't sure I would like this book but it has definitely grown on me and has become one of our favorites. I do like the idea of making up your own dialogue. As your child grows and understands different concepts you can add in different ideas each time you read. It's really pretty engaging. And it's something that your child can "read" on their own.

Okay, I'll admit it... I'm a thirtysomething male with no kids and I still bought this book. As an animal lover, and particularly a cat person, I couldn't resist the amazing drawings of Mr. Wuffles. Having owned a few black cats myself I was amazed at how realistic the drawings of the cat are!The story is pretty amusing and features a small group of tiny aliens that land in a ship that Mr. Wuffles thinks is a cat toy. After narrowly escaping Mr. Wuffles they are able to enlist the aid of some bugs to distract the cat while they escape. The story is very basic and features the aliens speaking in their own language so it is easy to follow for kids of all ages.If you like cats or just enjoy well illustrated books then this is one to add to your collection for sure!

I love this book. It's about a cat who doesn't get excited too easily, but finds a toy spaceship and plays with it, not realizing there are spacemen in it being knocked around. Their spaceship needs a part and the spacemen have to leave their ship in search for a piece to fix their ship. (without the cat discovering them). Such a darling book. I suggest ages 4 and up being that it may be difficult for any age younger understnading the concept.

I don't have kids but I bought this book because I love cats and the story idea interested me. My bf and I read it for fun and really liked it. It's obvious in how the cat is so well drawn that the author has one (or more) and observes its behaviour closely. I recognized Mr Wuffles actions in my own cats and couldn't help but smile. The artwork is fun and the book has very little dialogue, which was odd at first but became a big plus for me because it made the book different in that you had to pay attention to the pictures and interpret what was happening so it felt a bit more interactive. I imagine with a child this would be amusing to get their take on what's happening and discuss the imagery.

From now on, when my cats stare intently at seemingly empty corner (for forever), I'm gonna take a look-see for myself. You never know, what you might see. Cats are not the only curious creatures here on Earth. Forget about, 'Look to the skies!'........LOOK BEHIND THE RADIATOR!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is just awesome. A severly apathetic cat who wont play with his toys suddenly discovers a tiny alien race beneath his owners furniture. Im sure everyone has known one or two emotionless cats in their life, I had a cat just like this growing up....looked just like this and was totally uninterested in anything everyday and then every once in a while hed be all hyped with no explanation...lol. the concept is genius Its very much like a graphic novel. I bought this for my 14 month old son as an xmas gift, whose really too young for it yet, but i really enjoyed talking to him about whats going on in the pictures. Wordless stories are great for that. this book is genius, i love the way david weisner illustrates the facial expressions of the cat. I also love the alien dialoge bubbles im pretty sure triangle stands for some curseword like "f***!". Very clever and hilarious!

This book says it is for 'children', but I am not sure if they mean that in the traditional sense or if they mean more like 'adults who are child-like'. Either way, this book is definitely enjoyable as an adult. There aren't really any words in this book, so I am not sure if it works well with really young children or not (our son is 2, but he still likes looking at the pictures), but it is quite an adorable book.Pretty much a tale of a mischievous cat and his encounter with an unusual 'something' in his house. The illustrations are really detailed and the expressions of Mr. Wuffles as the book progresses are pretty entertaining. Definitely a book for you geekier people or cat lovers out there (whether you have kids or not). This was just a really cute and interesting tale told in pictures. But seriously, how can you resist a book about a cat named Mr. Wuffles?

This book was among many my kids received for christmas. I was alittle concerned since there is no text but my kids adore this one. While turning pages all i did was tell them what was happening on the pages. ask them what was happening and made funny voices for them when the aliens were speaking. It has taken off from there. They like to take turns reading the book to each other (ages 2 and 3) I love that they have a book that they can tell the story and there are no wrong answers. It is incredible and so funny eavesdropping on them reading to eachother ans seeing how they interpret the pictures. This was a great buy and I am so glad they liked it!
