The book is about dreams, about pain, about the limits of desire and hard work, about the pressure of time, about timelessness. There is this wise, melancholy strain running through it; like a clock ticking. Like this, from page 172:There's a timelessness to the hockey world, something that keeps those playing pure and innocent. But the clock is always ticking. We work to score goals, stopping the clock momentarily . We harness time in the plays we make, the plays we practice over and over and over to get right. But the moments are fleeting; the memories are what we play for.Or this, later on, near the end, part of a conversation between the author and a teammate:You ever think about what would happen if you were better? [the teammate asks.]What do you mean? [the author replies]Better at hockey. Whether we like it or not, the hard work s*** only gets you so far. Bottom line is there's s*** we can't control. I just wish I were better.That exchange stopped me dead in my tracks; it's so indescribably sad and true----- about many, many things in life, not just in hockey. Truth. Which is pretty much the hallmark of this book. The author's gaze never looks away.The book is filled with conversations that are pitch-perfect and real, which is no small accomplishment; really good writers often founder there. It's a story that FLIES along, as if on skates, told in a rush (no pun intended) like someone getting a long-bottled-up story off his chest and wanting to make absolutely sure that there is nothing, not one single moment of dishonesty in the telling. I finished the book two days ago; I couldn't put it down and now I can't get it out of my mind. Which is pretty much what you want in a book, right? Sticks with you.Read it; you'll see.

I wish I'd had the opportunities he's had to play hockey. However, good writing? It reads more like frat brothers sitting around the table trying to put a coherent narrative together, as if it was to become the 'Animal House' of hockey. As the book went on, the slower and less interesting the book became. There was less and less about hockey and more about meeting women. Wish there'd been more hockey.

This is one of the better hockey books out there. But it covers so much more than hockey. It's really a quest book. In Bill Keenan's case, instead of the grail it is a shot at high level pro hockey. It touches on the lengths we will go to pursue our dreams and does it with a great combination of humor and emotion. Keenan does not take himself too seriously while also finding the beauty in sports - be it the passion of fans, the bonds between teammates or the humor of a locker room or bus ride. If you've ever played on a team you'll recognize some of the characters he encounters at Harvard or in Belgium, Germany or Sweden. And when you finish it you are left missing the likes of "Mother Russia," "Chara," and Dean -- and you wonder what Erika thinks of it all. It's a touching and at times hilarious story.

The book is about a dream and the hard work it takes to keep it alive. The dream is be a pro hockey player. The author knows it. Is highly unlikely that he will ever play in a NHL game but is willing to do what it takes to try. The author does a fantastic job telling his story with a good balance of on ice and off ice stories. This is not War and Peace but a good light read , written with a sense of humor. The stories about his teammates are often hilariously.What I liked was he never played the" what if card". Did not dwell on how his career could have been different if the injuries at Harvard did not happen. A good first book from a budding author. Looking to find out what happened next in his life and career.Besides the stories about youth hockey on Long Island brought back memory of my youth playing at some of the same rinks. Nostalgia to me.

It's rare to find a person with enviable talents and accomplishments who is also self-assured enough to approach life with genuine modesty and humorous self-deprecation. In Bill’s case, we’re fortunate that one of these talents is the ability to write about his adventures in the uncharted world of hockey in a way that keeps the reader laughing as they cheer for Negative Game to put one in the net.

A few months ago I read a snippet of this book in Vanity Fair and immediately put it on my "to read" list. Having grown up playing youth hockey with NHL and college hockey dreams, I found the material right up my alley(I never lived that life, so to read it was great). I was even shocked to see some old familiar names from my time as a Squirt and Pee Wee on Long Island. Bill Keenan proves to be a sharp witted guy, who you can tell would have been a great teammate. He has a very self deprecating sense of humor that I found very funny. His stories from Lasker, to Harvard, to Belgium, Sweden and beyond made for some great reading and laugh out loud laughs.I found the book to be very enjoyable to read and I hope the author keeps up with the writing.

I was looking forward to a gripping, non-fiction read combining archeology with a rip-roaring good mystery. Alas, Mr. Preston provides some, but not enough, of both. However, he apparently felt that he needed more, so he added in a little "Hot Zone" (by another Preston, presumably not a relative) and some environmentalism and a bit of Siddhartha Mukherjee in his discussion of a tropical disease he contracted during the expedition he chronicles. Don't get me wrong -- I agree with his riffs on the deforestation disaster that's occurring in Honduras and elsewhere, as well as our susceptibility to diseases in a world where you can go from an uncharted, snake- and disease-infested jungle to midtown Manhattan in a day or two. The problem I have is that they are separate topics and probably deserve a more through treatment and that in addressing them in this book he makes it far less a "fun" read than I expected. (I also question whether he's sufficiently informed as to all of these areas to be trusted, but I do think he's very smart and I'm prepared to accept that he's something of a Renaissance Man.)So while the book was OK, I found it to be too much of a mish-mash of different topics, none of which was given adequate treatment and all of which distracted from the other topics.

Having been fortunate enough to travel to Central America to see the Mayan ruins at Copan, Tikal, Coba, and Chichen Itza I really connected with this story. The basic story line (based on true events) is about the discovery of the long lost "City of the Monkey God" (AKA "White City", etc.) after failed attempts during the 19th and 20th centuries. A technology breakthrough in radar, through combining of Laser and Radar technologies, finally enabled explorers/archeologists to "see" through the dense tropical jungle of central Honduras and see evidence of man-made structures, plazas, and other features that literally would have been next to impossible in "on the ground" expeditions. With support of the Honduran government, the U.S. led multi-national team uses helicopters to get to the site and make discoveries of artifacts. Without adequate time (or funding, or the ability to endure the dangers (disease, wild animals, pests, etc.) of the jungle) they make only two short trips (a couple of weeks each), and while no pyramids or dwellings are uncovered, they focus on the finding of a huge cache of highly valuable (archeologically and financially) carved items, vessels, altars, and other rare items. These two expeditions, and the planning activities leading up to them, comprise the bulk of the story. The follow-on is the formation of an organized Honduran national effort to protect and explore the find. Unfortunately, about half of the original team comes down with a rare tropical disease (internal parasites - ugh!) which can only be treated in a few locations around the world, and the treatment has painful side effects and only mitigates the disease without totally curing it. Also, the academic Archeological community is highly critical of the expeditions, terming them as more "Indiana Jones" adventuring than true 'on the ground' Archeological work. Nevertheless, the find is historic, and helps to shed light on the rather sudden demise and disappearance of the once mighty and numerous Latin American cultures. I found it a fascinating read (a page turner) and also very enlightening and educational. While many of us (at some point in our lives) probably dreamed of archeological and/or jungle adventure, this book opens your eyes to the dangers involved. Highly recommend.

The story starts off well and by and large moves apace and is interesting for the most part. As the author takes us through the history of the search for Cuidad Blanca, the ride keeps your interest. When the actual exploration begins you are keenly engaged in the search, and the author keeps your interest throughout. The largest critique is that the exploration phase of the book is short lived. The end of the book is largely a long description of infectious disease and a reiteration of the story of the Europeans bringing disease to the New World, and frankly gets a little tedious. Overall a good read and a good story.

I'm a big fan of the Preston & Child books, but I didn't know what to expect of Doug Preston as a journalist. After reading this, I think he's at least as talented with non-fiction as he is as a novelist. This book is terrific. It's a great story, and he manages to make it feel exciting, creating a nice sense of suspense thought the first 2/3 of the book. Most of the last 1/3 is fairly technical material related to medicine, but he communicates this material in a very reader-friendly manner. Bill Bryson is the master of this, but Preston here is nearly as skilled.

I never would have guessed one could write a whole volume on pitched roofs, but, now that I've seen it, I see how specialized roof construction is. This being a European book, there's far more coverage of various types of roofs, with the asphalt shingles that are ubiquitous in the US being but one of many options. Even thatched roofs are covered. There's an extended section on structural requirements, and even a mention of historical methods, using hammer beams, for example. But it's the building science section that stands out. This is covered to some degree in all the books in the Construction Manual series, but the concepts of heat flow, moisture control, etc., are explained at great length here. Practical guidelines are given based on the European building codes, and construction details abound. The translation to British English (e.g. roof sarking) is well-done and the book design and paper quality are every bit as good as the excellent and highly technical content.

One in a series of indispensible DETAIL Construction Manuals, Roof Construction covers a broad range of roof types from modern built-up and tensile roofs to traditional shake and thatched roofs to green and solar roofs, with an excellent collection of detail drawings at 1:10 scale. I love the Edition DETAIL's series of Construction Manuals. These books have taken some of the examples from their wonderful magazines series but is much more comprehensive. It covers the history of the materials, construction methods, material properties, example of projects built recently (within the past 10 yrs) and drawings of the enlarged details precisely and clearly labled. The price is a bit steep but I believe the book is well worth the price because you'll have a hard time finding books like these (concentrated on details) on the market (if you did please share the titles with us). One drawback on books like these is there's a danger the construction methods and details demonstrated in the book could become outdated as the years pass on. Another thing I would like to point out particular to the Roof Construction Manual is the book only covers pitched roof (otherwise I would have given it five stars).

This book is amazing and it is carefully detailed; I was happy to find the section in Thatch roofs with great details and especificatins, which are dificult to find. I strongly recomend it.

The author has a recent Ph.D. from Western Michigan University and runsher own consulting firm. This book on data presentation, her second, isfocused on elementary displays of data using MS Office. It joins anincreasingly crowded market and does not stand up well given someexcellent alternatives.If you have access to a copy and skim through, you may find examples ofunfamiliar graph types that could be useful. That's the most likelypositive use of this book I can imagine. In particular, I agree thatwhat the author calls 'dot plots' (Cleveland dot charts is another name)are often very helpful and should be used more frequently. Similarly,'slope graphs', an old idea under Tufte's new name, can be very good forshowing paired changes as labeled line segments.The book mentions 11 technical reviewers, all from universities. I haveto wonder whether they read the book, or perhaps more likely, how theyfeel about being named if their advice was ignored. Technically, thisbook is unreliable, and shows much evidence of the author's inexperienceand prejudices.Evergreen is negative about scatter plots and lays that on repeatedly:they are a 'complicated visual' (p.161), can be 'confusing to interpret'(p.165), and are suited for '[m]ore sophisticated groups' who have takenan 'advanced statistics course' (p.172). I come from a differenteducational system, evidently, in which scatter plots appear early inchildren's education and are a staple of every introductory statisticscourse. The author's main scatter plot example shows % of people ofcolor in various areas of New York City (y axis) versus number ofmilitary recruits per 100,000 residents (x axis). She repeatedly brushesoff the standard point that the axes would be better reversed (a pointalso poorly handled in her first book). This isn't just a cosmeticchoice: which variable is outcome (response) is crucial to thinkingabout such problems. Evergreen also fails to comment that the pattern ofscatter is strongly nonlinear, so the straight line fitted is absurd forthat reason, and indeed on other grounds too. Evidently, the authorneeded simpler examples that she could handle confidently.Similarly, Evergreen dislikes histograms which are 'not the sexiest'(p.140) and 'feel clunky to me' (p.145). These aren't serious comments,for all that she does continue with examples.The author is evidently no programmer (that's a comment, not acriticism) and focuses on how to get there step by step in MS Office(meaning MS Excel, mostly) using your mouse. Those sceptical of themerit of doing graphics at all within Excel will find their opinionsconfirmed by the dodges and fudges needed even to do some very simplethings. There are some unsystematic comments on using macros instead,which are mostly a distraction. There is little mention of the manyinternet resources available from more expert Excel users. There issome token R code on the author's website, which looks like a waste ofeffort given the mass of outstanding code already available.There are other technical mistakes that should have been caught byreviewers. There is reference to debate on whether bubble charts shouldbe sized by their diameter, radius or circumference (p.17), but there isno such debate. Any issue is over using areas or lengths, as any lengthbasis is equivalent to any other. 'Upper confidence interval' (p.25) isa slip for 'upper confidence limit'. Cluster analysis is not defined(even vaguely) by combining quantitative and qualitative data (p.183),although that is one of its applications.Evergreen broaches the difficulty of paraphrasing technical terms fornon-technical audiences, but some of her own suggestions fall far shortof acceptable. 'Statistically, there's a chance the actual score fallsin this range' is offered (p.26) as an explanation of confidenceinterval: that explanation is not just vague, it's completely vacuous.As other reviews note, no colors are used here except blue and grey. Aside-effect of that, which is not quite inevitable, is that many graphshere depend heavily on minor differences between shades of those colors.It is hard to like this book if, as I did, you find its written styleslangy and immature. Sample vocabulary includes amazing, awesome, baby,cool, cute, freak, geek (often), heaps, hush-hush, incredibly, kid,kinda, loads, nerd (often), ninja (oh so often), pow, rad, rock star(ditto), sorta, stellar, Super Academic, super bad, super cool, supercritical, super famous, super hero, super honest, super interested,super weird, um, whew, wimpy, wow, yay, yeah, yep, yikes, and yowza.(Also, if it's news: using MS Excel for presentation graphics doesn'tmake you a geek.)Combined with that style come careless editing and proof-reading. Thereis repeated confusion between it's and its and bizarre typos on thegraphs themselves, such as camradarie, kindney, ful (for 'flu') andindividulized. There is also confusion between i.e. and e.g., affect andeffect, axis and axes, rectangle and oblong, and disbursed anddispersed. Names of key figures in the field (Jorge Cameos, Mike Bostok)are mangled. No editor should have let through `the bottom of Indiana'and `the top of Kentucky' (p.229): the words being reached for might besouthern and northern, or something more precise.In total, writing and editing were poorly done. Maybe they were shooting for the minimalist homogenized design for this book which had shocking few examples of what I'd call great data visualization, this was like the chart picker in PowerPoint - very few real-world data visualization examples that pertained to a professional graphic artist/ presentation specialist who dies data vizualuzation constantly. I wanted to learn something from this book - a lot as a matter of fact, but that never happened and I shipped it back for a refund.

This text has been indispensable for me over the last year. I've learned so much about how to present data in a more visually appealing way (conceptually) and how to make that happen in Excel (practically). People in my department regularly come to me for help or to consult on reports and presentations, and my department director was so impressed with one particular report redesign, she called me "a numbers artist".I could barely work Excel well enough to do basic default charts back then, now Stephanie Evergreen has helped me develop a niche in my research group and she can help you too. Skeptical? Check out the photos I've attached on how we used to show data in charts and how we do it now.Bottom line: Buy it!

Can't replace (or create) INTELLIGENCE -- & a WELL-THOUGHT -- THROUGH -- message / point...

I am a big fan of Stephanie Evergreen and have both of her books. I must say that I was hoping this second book would have a bit more information about data visualization for Qualitative data. Only chapter 9 has this focus although one can pull bits and pieces from other chapters and the first book. Stephanie, if you are reading this, please put something out there for us Qualitative reachers in program eval. We need your help!

You will want this book if you want a reference book that takes theory and applies it in practical terms. While it focuses on Excel as its application of choice, it also simplifies the concepts about chart choices and data matching in a way that will get you up and running in a short period. I highly recommend this to anyone starting out, wants a good reference book, or needs the least amount of details to achieve good charts for most professional presentations. This is a fundamental "nuts and bolts" type book.

The first story about the original treecat adoption was so good I bought the whole treecat series and read that before moving onto the other two stories. The other two stories were so bad I don't even remember what they were about and I just finished it last night.One was something about Mexicans and someone named mince meat helping to scare a Havenite cruiser with an even crappier ship that they ran an 80's montage too while fixing it up. No really, an 80's montage plays on your kindle while reading that part. Mine played the Transformers one, "You've got the touch, you've got the power!"

Note to people unfamiliar with David Weber series. This book takes places in the universe of the Honor Harrington series (which started with On Basilisk Station). One of the stories, A Whiff of Grapeshot, might give more background into the series than one might like until after Honor Among Enemies, and the last part of the book gives general background into the universe, including history, politics and technology. For these reasons, the overall value of this book for non-fans of the series is rather low.For the *fans* of the series, on the other hand, there are three reasons to buy this book.First, the first tale, A Beautiful Friendship, tells the story of the first contact between human and treecats, a six-legged arboreal telepath sentient being alien being with some very feline features. Insights into treecat's culture and abilities, the story of the first adoption, and why do 'cats like celery so much, all of that you'll find here. It also shows that some of Honor's ancestors could give her a good run for her money. :-)Second, the third tale, tell us of some events that happen at the beginning of In Enemy hands, on the side of The People's Republic of Haven, which are only refered to in that book, never described. Insight into Haven's leadership minds.Third, the last section of the book, is a pretty deep background on the physics of space travel in HH universe, how the universe was colonized, history, geography and politics of the Kingdom of Manticore, history and some politics of the Solarian League and the People's Republic of Haven and comments on the military capabilities of Peeps and Manties at the beginning of the conflict. It covers nothing of what happens after the beginning of the series, nothing about treecats and nothing about Silesian Confederacy or the Andermani Empire. Moreover, all the really important notes are already in the series. Still, for those who just MUST know everything there is to know about the series, it has interesting details.David Drake's story is a disppointment, though. While the story has a few remarks to link it to HH universe, you would just have to change a few names and one would NEVER find any relation between this story and that universe. I suppose the story might be good, but this is just not Honor Harrington universe.

This is the second collection of shorts built around the "Honorverse" of David Weber. In this one, Honor Harrington does not appear at all but that doesn't stop it from being a good read. It consists of 3 short fiction stories and 1 "background" essay."A Beautiful Friendship" is by Weber. It details the story of Stephanie Harrington, Honor's ancestor, and her place as the first human to be adopted by a treecat. It is a good adventure story of an intelligent but headstrong young girl on a frontier planet. The genes that will eventually be passed on to Honor are present and visible."A Grand Tour" is the work of David Drake. It tells the story of an aristocratic scholar form Manticore who learns of an act of piracy by a Havenite ship. Since he has a reserve naval commission, he takes matters into his own hands using, of all things, a light cruiser won in a poker came. It comes across much more believably than it sounds."A Whiff of Grapeshot" is from S. M. Stirling. It takes place entirely on Haven and tells the story of the suppression of the Leveler revolt alluded to in some of the Honor Harrington stories."The Universe of Honor Harrington" is the background essay from Weber. In it, he details humanities march to the stars, describes the technology that makes it possible and looks at the political systems of Manticore and some of the other polities encountered in his series. It is well worth the read for fans.This is an excellent little volume.

This is a compendium of three stories, one by Weber, one by Drake and one by Sterling. Good enough to buy and read ... but I was left with the feeling I’d already read these. Sure, they’re “prequels” or some such, but, I still wondered if these weren’t just repackaged and sold under a new title.

This is a great addition to the Honorverse. Each story is well written and blends into the world of Honor Harrington without a hitch. These authors have contributed excellent work to Honorverse.The first story was about the first treecat and human adoption - this of course was David Weber and it was great! The last of the book deals with the intricacies of the world, such as space travel, settlements, timelines, etc.I love David Weber, David Drake and S.M. Stirling on their own, but together they were fantastic!

Fans of the Honor Harrington universe will find this book a great read!

David Weber is an excellent military sci-fi writer. He is the kind of author you cannot put down. I would recommend any of his books. The co-authors that he has chosen are also very good writers with gripping stories. Mr. Weber should continue to write more Honor Harrington books. Tally-ho.
