Review

“I’m unaware of any book currently on the market that tackles this specific material or topic. This gives the book plenty of originality. The author does a good job intertwining his discussion of the history of development in Lesotho from the perspectives of both the highter echelons of government and the man/woman on the street at the local level.” (Philip Muehlenbeck, George Washington University)“Aerni-Flessner’s wonderful collection of primary research is his greatest asset. He has dozens of interviews of ‘ordinary’ Basotho and American Peace Corps volunteers, and a solid collection of archival documents from Lesotho, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Given how difficult it is to find sufficient primary sources in postcolonial African states, this is a rare trove. They contribute to an outstanding book.” (John Clune, United States Air Force Academy)"This book fills in a critical gap in the history of Lesotho and provides a context within which to view the legacy of development work in this country. Aerni-Flessner’s examination of the dialectical relationship between development and nationalism in the discourse of pre- and postcolonial Lesotho sheds invaluable insight into the emergence of the anti-politics machine in the mid-1970s. Through his research on youth groups and women’s organizations, the author keenly illustrates the role that the aspirations of the average Basotho played in constructing notions of nation and development. The book also situates development in Lesotho within the wider context of the anti-apartheid struggle and cold war politics." (Scott Rosenberg, Wittenberg University)"Over the years Lesotho has received hundreds of millions of dollars in development assistance; yet it remains one of the world’s poorest countries. Drawing on extensive interviews and new documentary sources, John Aerni-Flessner’s Dreams for Lesotho critically examines the development process at all levels, including how ordinary Basotho perceived and assisted in shaping development efforts at the grassroots level. This is a must read for anyone interested in development anywhere in the world." (Robert Edgar, Howard University)

I sent copies to my daughter and ex-wife and they loved it!

Liked the variety would have liked more pix

Fun to read

We are train fans. We don't obsess about them the way some people do, but certainly we appreciate train travel. We have taken train trips all over the world, from the high-speed London-to-Paris route to a relatively leisurely sightseeing trip on the U.S. west coast Amtrak to a locals-centric exploration of the German Black Forest. Trains are certainly the most practical options for getting around most of Europe. And that's without taking model railroading into account. So when Amazon Vine offered me this Lonely Planet collection of "60 of the world's greatest and most unforgettable train journeys," it was easy to say Yes. It seemed like it'd be a perfect armchair travel, and perhaps would inspire us for a few upcoming trips. Mostly, I thought it'd be a fun "picture book," with maybe-useful text about the route and culture and what-to-expect.Well, sort of. I like the book, but not for the reasons I predicted. As I said, mostly I thought this would be eye candy. Many of the train journeys they detail go through exotic places. I expected at least some of the photos to be _of the train itself_ -- that is, if you take the Amtrak trip from San Diego to Seattle, this is what the sleeper cars look like and what you should expect from coach class seats. Nope. I thought it'd be accompanied with pretty photos of what you'd see out the window -- and there are some, but they are rare. Most of the book's photos are stock photos, including destinations you pass through but are not visible from the train. (The Amtrak Coast Starlight description has photos of the Golden Gate Bridge, for instance, as well as Lombard Street. You won't see either when you are on board, only if you hop off for sightseeing.) Some photos are an "action shot" of the train on the tracks in its natural habitat, though they all look as though they are vendor-supplied. That's quite disappointing; that element of the book is only 2 or 3 stars. On the other hand, Amazing Train Journeys is far more useful if you are thinking *practically* about making any one of these bucket-list trips. The info is well organized. Each journey has a map route including its major stops, along with the full journey's distance and expected time (e.g. 4 hours or two days). There's a short description of what makes this journey unique. A section called "riding the rails" describes the experience ("The first day, starting outside Seattle, the train plunges into deep forest..."); "life on board" describes pragmatic options ("Sleepers are snug roomettes for two (toilets and showers are located downstairs)"); "make it happen" describes booking issues (e.g. this train runs once daily, here's the website so you can book online). If you're thinking of actually DOING this trip, it's just the right amount of information to help you get started. Or at least to begin a serious conversation. The 60 journeys really are all over the world. The book organizes them by region: Africa and the Middle East; the Americas; Asia; Europe; Oceana. There are big long trips (including the week-long trans-Siberian Railway) and very short ones (such as the New Mexico Rail Runner, a 1.5 hour trip from Albuquerque to Santa Fe). Each journey gets about 4 pages, including those disappointing photos; often that's fine, but surely the longer trips deserve more verbiage?Still, I like the book -- just not for the reasons I expected. It's helped us consider the best route for us to take for London->Scotland on an upcoming vacation (the Calendonian sleeper? or the east coast main line?). Sometimes I pick up helpful hints; I didn't realize that the New Mexican train stops at the ALQ airport! And I've learned about plenty of train trips that I shall see only vicariously, such as Thailand's Death Railway or Sweden's Inlandsbanan. There's plenty to read, here! It just isn't a visual book.

I was provided a copy of this book specifically to review. That said, I try to be completely honest and transparent in all my reviews. This is not the typical Lonely Planet book. This is more like a bucket list maker, coffee table, discussion topic book. Most Lonely Planet books are all about how to travel cheaply and off the beaten path. The books are designed to be put in cargo pockets and be traveling companions.(Please see the enclosed pictures.)This is not one of those books. This is a beautiful, hard cover, perfectly bound book that describes amazing train trips with full color, two page spread pictures from around the world. This is a book for the world traveler and/or train lover to receive as a gift and cherish for the rest of his or her life.I **love** this book. As someone who loves to travel and has seen a large part of the globe, I know that I will never make it to many of these Train Journeys, but nothing can stop me from enjoying this book and imaging what it would be like to ride them.I highly recommend this book.

Lonely planet provides another great book for the armchair traveler. In the age of jet travel and space shuttles there is still that je ne sais quoi, indefinable quality of taking to the rail. I love trains. Living in Orange County CA I’ll sometimes go jump on the Disneyland train and just travel around the park a few times and then go home. This book will quell the itch of those who are looking for an adventurous real journey or just wanting to pretend. There are 60 journeys covering Africa & the Middle East; the Americas; Asia; Europe and Oceania. Some journeys are only a few hours and others are about a week. Each train journey listed starts with an info box giving the starting city, the end of the line city, departures (e.g. daily, 2 weekly, 1-3 monthly, etc.), duration of trip, and distance. This is followed by a descriptive overview.Along the bottom of some pages you’ll find a track insert with major cities or points of interest along the route. Each journey has a short paragraph *Life on Board (I wish these had been longer), *Upgrades which tell you about the classes available and *Make it Happen. Here you’ll find out about ticketing and you’ll have web sites you can go to for tour operators. The photographs are wonderful and help instill a sense of place as you read. There are tiny maps that give the basic geography of the area you’ll be traveling. OK, the binding is not the best but I don’t really care as I’ve only had the book a few days and it’s already coffee stained and dog eared in the most loving way.

I got this book as a Christmas gift, and love it. My only long distance train trip so far has been Philadelphia to Florida. We have a Philadelphia to Arizona train trip planned for June, and this book helped me select the best route of the two to take. My only wish the book covered more trips in the United States. There are only a few: New Orleans to Los Angeles, New York City to Poughkeepsie, NY, Chicago to San Francisco, Boston to Brunswick, Maine, and Seattle to LA.Should you be going to Africa and the Middle East: 5 trips; Asia:14 trips; Europe: 20 trips; Oceania: 6 trips; South America: 4 trips; Mexico and Cuba: 1 each; and Canada: 3 trips. Note that some trips in very exotic places are very short in duration, so you had better have other things to do in places like Mettupalayam, India. This is a fun read even if you love airports (I hate them). Quality paper, photos, and writing.
