I’d seen a flurry of articles about Frances Hardinge online, and was intrigued by the woman who wears a fedora for its sense of adventure. She’s a master storyteller: her writing in The Lie Tree is utterly captivating, the plot is surprising, and the themes are big and important—everything we bookworms hope a book could be.It was the 2016 Costa Book of the YearThe protagonist Faith, 14 and stuck in a ‘training corset’, grapples with heady topics: societal conventions and limitations on women, the discovery of the flaws in her father’s character, the clash of science and religion in Victorian England, and the mob mentality of people. Big ideas, fresh characters, and lovely writing made this one deliciously memorable.

It is a bit cliche to make the battle between science and religion as such, BUT, Hardinge is a brilliant writer, and she makes it work. Her writing, as ever, is brilliant - it's full and rich and incredibly beautiful. I liked the main character, Faith. She's a girl in an oppressive society who finds ways to battle with her inner sense of right and wrong and doggedly solves the mystery. I found the whole book to be a page turner -- I had a hard time putting it down. The mystery was well done, and the somewhat gothic, creepy, Victorian setting was perfect for Hardinge's particular flavor of tale spinning. Post mortem photos! Phrenology! Patriarchy! Burgeoning Natural Science study by gentlemen scientists!I did guess the 'whodunit' before the end because I remembered a key clue, but that didn't detract from the overall story. I found the characters complex and very interesting. The ending was satisfying, and the relationship between mother and daughter more promising than it had been at first. I do wish we had Howard, Faith's little brother, in the closing scene. He must be there, but he is notably absent from the description. I wonder if this was intentional, but I loved his character so much, I missed him at the end.I really enjoyed it overall, and anxiously await whatever Hardinge delivers up next.

Wow, I really, really enjoyed this one!I wasn't sure what to expect, but I thought the main character, Faith, ,was extremely interesting an relatable. I loved the issues of being a female and a child during the time period, and the complicated relationships between family. I thought Faith's complex feelings towards her mother and father were terribly realistic, and I really enjoyed seeing those evolve over the course of the novel. The mystery of the book was super interesting, especially with the mystical addition of the lie tree. So awful and amazing watching Faith spin lies in the name of vengeance, seeing those lies take on a life of their own, and watching Faith come to terms with the repercussions of what she'd set in motion.Overall a well-written and gripping novel that kept me interested throughout. Definitely plan on looking into more of Hardinge's work.

This young adult book combines mystery elements and Victorian science, yet despite those plus points, it proved not to be my cup of tea. I note that it has won multiple awards, so I am probably just the wrong reader for a story that others have loved. I did like the way the book showed the limited options women had in Victorian England, and I also thought the mystery elements were handled well. However, I never actively liked Faith, the main character, though I believe I was expected to do so. For instance, I think she is meant to love her younger brother, yet I didn't feel her affection for him except slightly and sporadically. Though the book is often detailed, including in its description of Faith's thoughts, I didn't find it immersive, which left me less engaged. I also found the central conceit of the Lie Tree implausible.

The Lie Tree is a wonderfully imagined novel with one of the most engaging heroines in the YA genre. The Reverend Erasmus Sunderly has fled, family in tow, to the remote island of Vane to escape the consequences of a mysterious scandal. Daughter of the house, teen-aged Faith Sunderly, must find out why, no matter the cost. Thus begins a tale of intrigue, murder and deceit that will catch and keep your attention until the last word.

Too much fantasy- a lie tree? A scientist who destroys their reputations for the truth? Nahh...didn't really like any of the characters- even the heroine, but it filled in 4 hours on a airplane.

While clearly accessible to teens, this book is enjoyable for everyone. There's lot to like - evolutionary science and its politics in the Victorian age, the secret lives of women and girls during that period, a little magical realism and allegory, and an engaging mystery. Teens looking for a little more substance and something different than the slew of I-have-a-dying-friend-and/or-how-will-we-make-it-through-this-dystopian-world novels should read this book.

This book. My god. The plot was amazing, overlayed by excellent character development that brought up themes of coming to terms with your own beliefs and seeing people who you hold dear for who they truly are. The writing is also fabulous, the entire book has dark and ominous feel, with beautiful descriptions. Love, love, love this book.

Heaven and the Afterlife, by James L. Garlow

From Publishers Weekly

Religious or not, most people have contemplated what happens after death. One particularly common question: is the afterlife a fantasy concocted to give us hope that the end of earthly life is not the end of our story? Garlow (Cracking Da Vinci's Code) a pastor, and Wall, a writer and editor, are certain there is an afterlife. They draw upon scientific studies of near-death experiences, biblical scholarship and personal anecdotes to make their case. At times their project appears objective and scholarly, drawing upon the likes of Kübler-Ross and her seminal work on death and dying. But it also uses literalist interpretations of Christian scripture that, unsurprisingly, prove that anyone who does not accept Jesus had better invest in a flame-retardant suit for the afterlife. The authors' attempt to describe what heaven is actually like seems arbitrary—there is music but no sex or marriage—and based on debatable exegetical premises. The most compelling passages are those that comment on how the living deal with the death of loved ones. These sections could give hope to readers suffering from personal loss. Wow, nothing like real life experience's!!! The testimonies are so great, because they are True and people actually lived thru these things. If it hasn't happened to you, please don't use that as an excuse to not believe it, your only cheating yourself of a deeper and more meaningful life with your Creator. These writers, have it right, not everyone is gonna make it to heaven, like so many other books I have read on Amazon, of their, only heaven experience, they lost something in their experience. Sure, all is blissful there and euphoria and the height of happiness, but not all will be permitted to enter, if people don't begin to work on getting rid of the works of the flesh, habitual sin, with Jesus inside, and work on it wholeheartedly. Corruption, cannot enter Paradise and be able to stay there! How do I know? My spiritual disaster in 1988, on my living room floor, not on drugs of any kind, wide awake, invisible demons holding me down tormenting me and choking me as I knew I was about to leave earth! It's Only, because I whispered, "JESUS HELP ME," over and over, that I am still here, to enlighten ALL. Amen, come rescue us Savior, from every evil thing! Buy this book.

This book gave me an answer to a lot of questions. My husband was diagnosed with brain and esophageal cancer last October 2015. He was given 4 months to live. He had 22 radiation treatments on his brain and was starting on his esophagus when he got real weak and couldn't go on with the treatments. My husband has been a Church of God pastor of Anderson Indiana since 1991. He was not afraid of dying and had preached about death many times, but he wanted to continue teaching middle school as a sub. God had been with us for many, many years and we have learned to lean on him. Well Doug didn't get his wish to stay on earth and God took him home 2 months and a week after he was diagnosed. It was a shock for our family and friends. Doug was always the picture of health and encouraged others to be active and do things outdoors and enjoy life as he did. We only have 1 son and a stepson and we lived 2000. Miles apart. It was hard but they both came to be with him before he passed. My son has since moved me back to our home state and I am adjusting. My question was what happens instantly when someone dies? Did Doug sit in limbo and wait or did he know he was in heaven. This book answered that for me by the out of life experiences of those dying and coming back to life. I felt that he instantly saw his grandfather and grandmother who he missed and loved very much. I could see his open arms to them and they to him and it gave me great joy and peace. The rest of the book was icing on the cake. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it reinstated my beliefs that I have been taught my whole life. God is a just God and if we don't believe him and his word then there is a place for us called hell. No sugarcoating. But we have the choice to choose him and we live with him forever in Heaven. As my husband would say, a no brained. Thank you Jim Garlow. I will be visiting your website.

I am a Christian woman. I bought this book based on a review that stated this book was in line with scripture. I am often skeptical of books on heaven because some things do not line up with the bible, and if they do not, I do not give them credence. The stories in this book are so beyond imagining, even if you have an open mind you may find yourself saying, did this really happen? I believed everything I read in this book and found myself, over and over, crying and giving thanks to a loving God who reached grieving people in dozens of different ways. People who saw departed loved ones, people who were dying and saw their already-departed loved ones with their arms stretched out waiting for them. Descriptions of heaven, and yes, even a frightening description of a man's experience of hell. God is good and loving, desires to comfort us and His angels work amongst us as well. This is a wonderful book that lines up with the teachings of the bible, otherwise I would not be recommending it. One thing that had me almost burst into tears was a man describing seeing his pets in heaven. I had thought this was never going to happen. I have lost pets that I grieved for like some people grieve for their favorite relative. If it is so I will see them again, I can wait for any length of time for that fulfilled promise. I am very grateful to the authors of this book, to the people who so bravely came forth with their fantastic stories, and for a very great, loving and good God.

This book is a collection of stories of people who have had near-death experiences in which they had visions or thought they went to Heaven or Hell, as well as other supernatural experiences. While interesting to read, the stories don't prove anything as they are all intensely personal experiences. One group of stories was about people who had been visited or contacted by a loved one who had died. I'm not sure that people can return to earth after death, but I know people do have supernatural experiences. I had a vision of my husband a few weeks after his death. He didn't say a word to me, but I just saw him standing behind me, looking young, healthy, and full of joy. I already knew where he was, but the vision did bring me a sense of peace. Whenever I find myself feeling sad, I remind myself of how joyous he is.
