Review

"Brutal Bloc Postcards" plays on nostalgia while exploring Brutalism's social ideas and the ambitious scale of Soviet urban planning. (Marianna Cerini CNN)In rather stark contrast to the documentation of Soviet architecture commonly showcased today, this surreal collection of images consists of scenes depicting what was considered the bright future of Communism. A well written fiction can be a great introduction to history and provoke understanding that is deeper than factual learning of the history. This book, written only a few years after the historical setting of the story by a young, only 28 year old writer then, is a remarkable example. The story of Kenyans, during the 4 days before the independence from British Empire, a very precarious time of the nation, with the thick dark cloud of violent future, typical of a birth of a new nation. The story goes back and forth between current time and the 1950's since Mau Mau, and the characters-mysterious and reclusive Mugo, love triangle of Mumbi, Karanja and Gikonyo, and political martyr Kihika--testify the multilayered views on the suffering, survival and fights of the Kenyans as well as daunting tasks of sorting out the history after liberation. There are quite clear motifs--Moses, the holy family, Joseph and Mary, crucifixion, Judas etc, symbolizing judgment, betrayals, forgiveness, confession, rebirth, hope and despair. It is entertaining as a page turning drama, full of suspense of looking for the traitor, but it is also a very complex and rich literature, not only with great plot but also with philosophical and political weight.historical and philosophical weight.

The expectant hope of Kenya in the four days in 1963 leading up to independence from Britain in a small town. Like all small towns, secrets lie just below the surface and the greatest belongs to the haunted and silent village hero, Mugo.Ngũgĩ deftly winds through flashbacks and current events to reveal how the seeds of future dischord are already sown in the struggle for independence through characters who all seem to show equal parts weakness and courage. The great national leader, Jomo Kenyatta, is mentioned only in reverent tones in this novel. But in its present form, Ngũgĩ lightly reworked the masterwork of East African fiction a decade after his year long detention by Kenyatta's government. In fact, all of this novel lies both close to the life of its author, who write Grain of Wheat just a few years after independence came to his country, while he studied in England. And the author creating sympathy in the reader for the betrayals we each can make along the way is not insignificant. The problems of colonialism are seen in the idealistic John Thompson who writes his work "Prospero in Africa" full of moral authority. He ends up an even more cruel oppressor that the man he followed and dashing his hopes for rising in the ranks of British service in the process. This is a work worthy of its considerable reputation.

An intimate look at a grueling experience that few of us can imagine. How individuals overcome the heinous treatment given in the name of providing "better" governance to a society, I don't know. This is human nature at its best, its most raw, its purest.Despite the extreme differences in culture and lifestyle, the reader is left with knowing and empathizing with the characters - at heart we are all the same - our breed of animal, we humans, experience the same basic emotions - love, hate, guilt, anger, fear, resentment, despair, hope.

Historical fiction set on events leading up to the liberation (Huhuru) of Kenya from British rule in 1963. The author creates different characters and situations that demonstrate the challenges of becoming independent. Among them violence, corruption, racism and sexism. What I found interesting about this book is how there are a few protagonists that present the plot of the story. This at times can get confusing and challenging for the reader trying to keep up with all the characters and stories. The author also moves back and forth in time making it difficult to follow the stories. Overall a very good novel that gives you an insight in a period of history not just in Kenya but throughout the African continent.

This story takes place in Kenya during the 4 days leading to independence from Britain with flashbacks to history. Many unfamiliar cultural and historic references made it a little challenging to fully appreciate, but the writing was vivid and drew me into the story. The themes of oppression, individual and national independence, love, betrayal, and guilt are woven into thought-provoking read.

I chose this book for my book club because we had read 4 books about Africa all by white writers. I felt we needed another perspective. This book definitely gives us that but beyond the simple, it is so well written. Though the story is confusing in it back and forth time shifting, this made it more real because this is how we experience life. Things do not come to us all in a rush. We gradually gain knowledge of people, of events. Sometimes that leads to disgust where once was admiration. Sometimes it leads to forgiveness where once there was hate. Keeping track of unfamiliar names is hard but this journey in these peoples lives is worth it.

At times, it is slow. But overall a solid account of post colonial Kenya- with good, intricate historical details. I will read the author again, for sure.

In this novel you can hear the different voices of people in a community telling their story, all individual stories, all shaped in some way by the events in Kenya just before independence, and they all add to a picture which builds up to a dramatic ending. It is magic.I found the central character, Mugo, very interesting. His dream, the extent to which he defends it, his guilt, his bravery. The difference between how people percieve you and how you percieve yourself.I did not know anything about Kenya or the Mau Mau rebellion before reading this book and it made my world grow. But also I was left thinking about the evil of colonialism and more generally about the lies we tell ourselves in order to make sense of our world.
