I am not even sure what compelled me to purchase this book (months ago) except that I like biographies, especially ones that are meant to inspire, but upon having an extraordinarily realistic dream a couple of weeks ago about Cupcake Brown being the keynote speaker for the Gordon Parks Celebration (we live in his town of birth and my husband telling me Cup was not involved in this, much to my disappointment), I figured God was telling me it was time to read this book. I really do not have adequate words for this book. It truly was so much more than what I was expecting. I have struggled lately with varying aspects of my life and my relationship with God, and I think this book has helped me put a lot of things in perspective and seek God as I once did. While Cup and I do not appear to have very much in common (I'm currently a middle-aged stay-at-home white mom of three children), I can completely relate to a lot of things she experienced as a child that lead her down a wild path in order to numb the pain, having endured several things most people cannot fathom in their day-to-day life. In addition to the abuse suffered, so much of Cup's book resonated with me, like: learning as an adult what my childhood dreams were and that it is never too late to achieve them, learning to love and forgive myself and those who have hurt me, working through anger issues, learning to trust God and not be ashamed of my past. Cupcake is truly proof that God means it for good. I am grateful Cupcake shared her real story; it's inspiring and reaching people years after it has been told. If you are someone who is struggling in life, a wounded soul, or just looking for something inspiring to read, I would definitely recommend this book. You will not be let down!

It took me a while to get into this book because of the terrible things that Cupcake experienced and the choices she made but it is a very inspiring book that no matter what you have been through, how little you have, you can turn it around if you are determined and put the hard work in. Cup was able to accomplish so much near the end - I kind of wish more emphasis was put onto the amazing things near the end - after struggling to get to where she turns it around I didn't want the book to end because I wanted to hear more of the great things she has done. I have seen too many lives affected by drugs and this gives me hope that more people in situations like this can and do turn it around to become successful and have a rewarding life. My cousin battled with drugs and addiction from a young age and then when approaching 40 he got clean and went back to school. He just graduated at the top of his class and was hired with what I believe is one of his first jobs EVER and is doing fabulous. I am so proud that he made the decision and is doing so well now. He sees what it's like to live life to the fullest and is happier than ever. This book gives you a "good feeling" and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a motivational/inspirational story.Great job Cupcake Brown!! Thank you for sharing your story and I am so glad you were able to overcome all of the unfortunate situations you had to deal with through your life! I hope people dealing with an addiction can see that there is life without drugs and that they really can succeed if they have the determination.

I really like this book. It's heart-wrenching & angering & I had to take a break from it every now & then but it was awesome to read how she triumphed & overcame! I loved reading about how she pushed through & preseved & how God reached down & saved her. How He blessed her time & time again & surrounded her w/an encouraging group of ppl that wouldn't let her give up! Her relationship with God grew & in Him she found freedom. It's difficult to read what she went through but her testimony is so very worth it!

I thought this book was engaging and well-written. Although it is difficult to read about the things that Cupcake went through as a child I feel it is important to expose yourself to this type of information in order to maintain empathy for those around you. As a former social worker, I was taken back to my days as a child abuse investigator and the frustrations that I had with the system. I would like to say that it has improved a lot since the 70's and 80's but much of what Cupcake experienced still goes on. Hopefully reading this book will help others empathize with those in the foster care system, or products of it, and maybe spark some to advocate for change or become foster parents themselves. I would like to see an epilogue that updates what Cupcake has been doing with her life and her law degree.

If you do get this I recommend the audio book. The narrator brings it to life and I was hooked, listened to the whole book in less than a week!!! A great read but pretty blunt and vulgar at times so not for the faint of heart or for kids... do t let the name good you it’s not all cupcakes ... it’s the cold hard true of drugs, abuse, rape and just how much the body and soul can endure ...

Here it is, the book that will break you, rip your heart out and somehow piece it back together again. You will need multiple heart check breaks to keep up with everything Cupcake endured.Eleven, Cupcake was eleven when she found her mother dead, eleven when she was ripped from the only family she’s ever known and eleven when she was forced into womanhood. It was survival ever since.I appreciate Cupcakes honesty, her rawness, her unapologetic retelling of every emotion she had. I wanted to fight for her and wondered many times why no one stepped in and did right by her. I want to ask all of the adults she encountered if the money they received was worth torturing and taking away her childhood? I want to ask those men how they can live with themselves knowing what they had done.I would recommend this book. It’s a hard one to get through, but well worth it in the end.

This book is a highly accessible narrative of critical race theory. I learned a lot.

Good, short read on CRT. This books serves as a good overview of CRT and how it applies to various races. It also does a good job canvassing some of the history of CRT. While this development may be a bit scant, I am unaware if this is because the lack of breadth and depth of the field or if that is a peripheral concern of the book.

A great read for the critical thinker.

We are using this book in an important class in my Social Work School. I'm reviewing it here to counteract the uninformed and childish attacks on it in the previous review. Its absurd to judge a book as a failure or useless to the reader on the basis of such bizarre categories as "marxist" or too focused on issues of race. Its a book about race in the US--of course its going to have information, perhaps uncomfortable information for some readers, about racism, racial theory, and history of the US. The willful ignorance of the average angry Trump Voter, the refusal to acknowledge the perspectives of POC or academics and theoreticians of race is not a very useful stance to take on reading anything. Let alone reading a book about race.

I purchased this chapter book about two years ago when my daughter was just 5 1/2 years old. Since then, both my husband and I have read the story to her several times. Now that she's in Second Grade, she is able to read for herself--thank goodness--and has done so on at least two occasions. LOL The story is very sweet, and there are some lovely illustrations throughout the book. I have to admit that when I first read the story (I've had to read it several times! LOL) I enjoyed it almost as much as my daughter did.In this story, Aurora plans a surprise party for the three good fairies. Trying to keep the party a surprise, however, is easier said that done, considering that at every turn Aurora discovers the fairies are close behind. LOL This is a really cute story, and is sure to delight any little one who enjoys princess stories. My daughter loves it and highly recommends it.

Like another reviewer, the pages of the book started coming out on the first reading (I should have returned it). With continued readings, it got worse. I've had the binding repaired twice, but after more use, the pages fell out again. We've never had a Disney book fall apart before, and I expect better from a brand like Disney. Btw, this takes place after Aurora got married. My girl would like more stories like that for all the princesses.

My four-year-old loves princesses (imagine that!), but especially Aurora. Her older brother has a lot of activities that she must be patient while he participates. I purchased this to give us a quiet activity to do while he is doing his thing and we are waiting (and watching). Being read aloud to is a terrific literacy-building activity, and I enjoy seeing her expressions when I'm telling the story. Of course, she'd like to see more images (because she's four). I realize it's a chapter book, but she still wants more visual stimulation (thus, the four and not five stars).

I bought this for an almost four year old as a way to introduce her to chapter books. We read a chapter or two a night and with her favorite characters it is a hit! I bought 4 others for her and I'm glad to have her into reading these types of books! I'm going to introduce new chapter books and characters when we finish these 5

We recently discovered these short chapter books at a book fair. My daughter LOVES them! She's usually so hyper at night when it gets to be bed time, but these have really calmed her down. There aren't very many pictures, so she really has to listen to the story and create the image in her mind. I love the time that we have together when reading these!

Book is so damaged its unreadable to review.

We (my 5.5 and 3.5 year old girls) are transitioning from ALL picture books to something a little more substantial. Even the little one can sit through several pages without looking at pictures - and I watch her eyes glaze over a bit, while she's imagining the story in her head.It's a very simple story that is easy to understand and we read ours, a few chapters at a time, over a week or so.PS - I've written the same review for this and the Belle version of this book. They're both the same level and fun for kids!

My daughter LOVES these books! She's only four, but has no problem paying attention and is highly motivated to try her hand at reading. We read a "chapter" a night, and she's always begging for more. They're sweet, simple stories with an occasional illustration.

It would be worth knowing that although San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are only 75 km. apart, most things in San Miguel cost double what they cost in Guanajuato.The book speaks highly of Cuernavaca, but anyone considering it as a place to live should be aware that it has a long-term high crime rate. This really should have been mentioned.And speaking of San Miguel de Allende, it says that the local newspaper has an astrology column. Excuse me, but should someone considering moving there and forking over $250,000 for a house (yes, that's what they cost) be influenced by an ASTROLOGY COLUMN?However, chapter nine addresses the requirements and steps involved in immigrating to Mexico. As far as I can tell, it's accurate. Anyone who has decided to take this step should read this chapter VERY carefully.Chapter eleven deals with the ins and outs of car ownership in Mexico, including getting a driver's license. Again, pretty accurate, but I was surprised that no mention was made of using UCD (the Democratic Campesinos Union) license plates as a way of avoiding the complexities of registering foreign vehicles.The remainder of the book is useful information on a lot of topics; the idiosyncrasies of using telephones, health care, banking, buying and selling homes, and food. Chapter 24, "Handy guides", contains an interesting and sometimes amusing Spanish lesson.

The Move to Mexico Bible is a great resource if you have recently moved to Mexico or are thinking about moving to Mexico.We moved to Mexico about a year ago and Sonia Diaz (one of the authors) was a tremendous help with the transition and visas, medical insurance and more. This book contains facts, information, resources and some very useful advice and opinions.

The best part of the book is the comparison of the different geographies. This has helped me narrow down my list. Then, are good practical write ups on the minutia of cars, pets, and visa. Only criticism is that The authors is a little obsessed with Costco and Walmart. Why do you think I want to move to Mexico? It is to get away from this hell hole cosumerism. Other than that annoyance, a solid book.

My issues are health insurance, vehicle licensing, immigration procedures, and location to live. This book covers all that and a lot more. Best money I have spent on a book.

I am moving to Mexico in a few short months. of all the dozens of guidebooks, discussion groups and friendly advice I've digested in the past two years, this book sums it all up in a concise, easy-to-read format and answers just about any questions a retiree, adventurer or person ready to change their life may have. I'm a proud Nicaraguan and I can appreciate the book for the information into our own Nicaraguan language. I found it funny, realistic and wonderfully truthful. It is missing a lot of other phrases that I grew up listening to and enjoying and actually still us but it does give you a chance to learn to speak and understand how the culture and the language in Nicaragua goes together. As a person who has friends from other countries and they at times do not understand my Nicaraguan spanish I will use this book as a guide to help them keep up with the conversation.

Amazing book! I used to live in Nicaragua (and had a beautiful Nicaraguan girlfriend before I moved there), so with many friends, stories, histories and memories there and a great love for the culture, I really appreciated this e-book. I definitely recognized some of the regional vocabulary words/sayings in there, and I even learned plenty of new ones! I could think of a few that were not mentioned, but hey, 200 or so entries is pretty darn good and it's hard to find anything about Nicaraguan Spanish, let alone this great book chock full of Nicaraguan idioms! I also like Jamison's witty commentaries filled with humor and profound insight as he remarks on the meanings of these words and sayings. This is my "Bible of Nicaraguan Spanish" - not bad for having been written by a gringo! Five stars, all the way!

LOVE, LOVE.LOVED this book. During the 13 yrs. that I spent in Nica. I had always thought that they needed a book of their 'dichos/palabras nicas'. This book is exactly what I had in mind. It really is a must read if you are planning a trip to Nicaagua and would like to understand 'their language'. For me it is helping me rem. the words that are unique to Nica. and it brings back many happy memory's every time I pick it up.

Purchased as a gift. They enjoyed this on their trip.

My Nicaraguan friends give this book a thumbs up. The words and expressions are spot on for what the locals speak.
